## Recognition and Reality of Concerns Regarding Phimosis

Although the term "phimosis" is widely known, how many men correctly understand its types and their own condition? Due to its delicate nature, it is not uncommon for men to harbor these worries without consulting anyone.

What are the true feelings of men, from discomforts experienced in daily life, reasons for hesitating to consult medical institutions, to their awareness of health risks if left untreated?

Therefore, in collaboration with MS Clinic, we conducted a nationwide survey targeting 300 men in their 20s to 50s on "The Reality of Phimosis Recognition and Concerns."

## 41.7% Responded, "I know there are several types of phimosis."

First, we asked about their level of knowledge regarding "phimosis."

As a result, 41.7% of respondents, the largest group, answered, "I know there are several types of phimosis."

This was followed by 25.7% who said, "I know the word 'phimosis' but don't know the details," 19.3% who said, "I don't know at all," and 13.3% who said, "I accurately know the differences between pseudophimosis, paraphimosis, and true phimosis."

The number of men who accurately understand the differences in types remains at only about 10% of the total, suggesting that for many men, phimosis is a topic they "somehow know about but don't understand in detail."

## 15.7% Responded, "I correctly understand that I have phimosis."

Next, we asked about their perception of whether they have phimosis.

As a result, 26.0% responded, "I correctly understand that I do not have phimosis," 25.7% said, "I don't know/cannot judge," 19.3% said, "I think I don't have phimosis," 15.7% said, "I correctly understand that I have phimosis," and 13.3% said, "I might have phimosis."

Combining those who "correctly understand that I have phimosis" and those who "might have phimosis," approximately 29% of men recognize that they have phimosis or that they might have it.

On the other hand, 25.7% responded, "I don't know/cannot judge," indicating that about one in four men cannot accurately determine their own condition.

## 74.7% Responded, "I have pseudophimosis."

Next, we asked those who responded that they have or might have phimosis about the type of phimosis they have.

As a result, "pseudophimosis (glans is exposed during erection)" accounted for the majority at 74.7%.

This was followed by 16.1% who said, "I don't know my type," 6.9% who said, "paraphimosis (difficult to return after retraction, causes pain)," and 2.3% who said, "true phimosis (glans is not exposed even during erection, difficult to retract).

Pseudophimosis is considered a relatively common type among Japanese men, but about one in six men answered, "I don't know my type," suggesting that the degree of symptoms varies widely, and self-diagnosis is often difficult.

## 43.7% Responded, "I have not felt any particular distress or discomfort."
