A survey conducted by NEXER Co., Ltd. and Deccs Co., Ltd. on 'Earthquake and Disaster Prevention Awareness and Measures in Homes' revealed that approximately 63% of custom home residents feel anxious about earthquake preparedness, and about 72% prioritize seismic performance when purchasing a home. Survey on 'Earthquake and Disaster Prevention Awareness and Measures in Homes'
Japan is one of the most earthquake-prone countries in the world.
In recent years alone, major tremors have repeatedly occurred in various regions, renewing interest in housing seismic resistance and disaster prevention.
Among these, custom-built homes, which reflect individual preferences from scratch, are not only about design and layout but also about performance as a 'preparation' to protect the lives of families.
How do people actually living in custom homes confront their anxiety about earthquakes and what measures are they taking?
Therefore, in collaboration with Deccs Co., Ltd., we conducted a survey on 'Earthquake and Disaster Prevention Awareness and Measures in Homes' targeting 163 men and women nationwide who responded in a preliminary survey that they 'purchased a custom home and currently live in it.'

'Survey on Earthquake and Disaster Prevention Awareness and Measures in Homes' Overview
Survey method: Online questionnaire
Survey period: April 10, 2026 - April 21, 2026
Target respondents: Men and women nationwide who responded in a preliminary survey that they 'purchased a custom home and currently live in it.'
Valid responses: 163 samples
Questions:
Question 1: Do you feel anxious about earthquake preparedness for your current home?
Question 2: Please tell us the reason.
Question 3: Do you know your home's 'seismic resistance rating'?
Question 4: How much did you emphasize the seismic resistance rating when purchasing your home?
Question 5: Please tell us the reason.
Question 6: Have you taken any action regarding disaster prevention measures for your home in response to recent major earthquakes? (Multiple answers allowed)
Question 7: Which do you prioritize: 'seismic performance' or 'design and layout flexibility' for your home?
Question 8: Please tell us the reason.
*As a general rule, numbers are rounded to the second decimal place, so the total may not be 100%.
■ 63.1% responded that they 'feel anxious' about earthquake preparedness for their homes.
First, we asked custom home residents how anxious they feel about their home's earthquake preparedness.
20.2% responded 'very anxious' and 42.9% responded 'somewhat anxious,' totaling 63.1% who feel some anxiety.
On the other hand, 30.1% responded 'not very anxious' and 6.7% responded 'not at all anxious,' indicating that a certain number of people feel secure.
We asked for the reasons for each response, and here are some examples:
Those who responded 'very anxious' or 'somewhat anxious':
・Because you never know when it will happen. (Female, 20s)
・Because the roof and other parts were damaged after a big tremor. (Female, 30s)
・Even with seismic resistance, there might be damage depending on the scale of the earthquake. (Female, 40s)
・Although it's seismically designed, not all furniture can be fixed. (Male, 50s)
Those who responded 'not very anxious' or 'not at all anxious':
・Because seismic resistance was prioritized. (Female, 40s)
・Because it was a housing manufacturer known for being earthquake-resistant. (Female, 50s)
The reasons for feeling anxious include not knowing when an earthquake will occur and worrying about tremors exceeding expectations. Also, the comment 'even with seismic design, furniture cannot be completely fixed' suggests that the performance of the house itself cannot completely alleviate anxiety.
On the other hand, those who feel less anxious seem to have prioritized seismic resistance when choosing a housing manufacturer. It is thought that thoroughly checking the structure and performance before building led to a sense of security.
■ 82.2% 'do not understand' the content of their home's 'seismic resistance rating'.
Next, we asked if they knew about their home's 'seismic resistance rating'.
Seismic resistance rating is an index that indicates the strength of a house against earthquakes, categorized into levels 1 to 3.
A higher rating means a lower risk of collapse and is used as a guideline for judging housing performance.
As a result, only 17.8% responded 'know it'.
On the other hand, 54.6% responded 'have heard of it but don't know the content' and 27.6% responded 'don't know it'. Combined, 82.2% do not have a detailed understanding of their home's seismic resistance rating.
It seems that few people understand the seismic performance of their own homes as a specific numerical value.
This result suggests that many people do not sufficiently check the content of seismic resistance ratings when purchasing a home.
■ 60.2% 'did not emphasize' seismic resistance ratings when purchasing a home.
Next, we asked how much they emphasized seismic resistance ratings when purchasing a home.
