A recent survey revealed that 92% of homeowners are unaware that spring is the peak season for exterior wall painting. While over 80% expressed a desire to avoid the busy season to potentially save costs and ensure careful work, nearly 65% lack a clear understanding of the actual pros and cons of off-season painting. ■ 92% answered "I do not know that requests for exterior wall painting are concentrated in spring"
First, we asked whether they knew that requests for exterior wall painting are concentrated in the spring.

As a result, 92% answered "I do not know," while those who answered "I know" remained at only 8%.
While there is a trend in the industry where requests for exterior wall painting tend to be concentrated in spring and autumn when temperature and humidity are stable, it is evident that this is hardly known to general homeowners.
■ 57.5% answered "The construction period is likely to be delayed during the busy season"
Next, we asked what kind of impact they thought requesting during the busy season would have.

The most common answer was "The construction period is likely to be delayed" at 57.5%.
This was followed by "The cost is likely to be higher" at 56%, and "It becomes difficult to make a reservation on the desired date and time" at 45.8%.
It can be seen that several inconveniences often arise during the busy season, such as delays in the construction period, increased costs, and difficulty in making reservations at the desired date and time. It can be said that it is important to consider these points in advance and plan your request.
■ 81.3% answered "I want to avoid the busy season and request during the off-season"
Next, we asked if they would like to avoid the busy season and request during the off-season if they were to have their exterior walls painted.

As a result, 41% answered "strongly think so" and 40.3% answered "somewhat think so," showing that a combined 81.3% of people desire to make requests during the off-season. On the other hand, 9% answered "don't really think so" and 9.8% answered "don't think so at all," resulting in about 20% of people not caring about the timing.
We asked about the reasons for their respective answers, so here are a few.
Reasons of those who want to request during the off-season
- Because it seems like it will take a long time to get attended to, and the rates seem like they would be higher during the busy season. (Male in his 30s)
- Because I want them to respond with room to spare, rather than pushing themselves during the busy season and doing a sloppy job. (Female in her 40s)
- Because it would be a problem if there were mistakes due to the work being rushed. (Male in his 40s)
Reasons of those who do not want to request during the off-season
- Because I think I should request at a time that is convenient for my personal circumstances. (Male in his 10s)
- I want to consider it at the timing when it can be done when needed. (Male in his 40s)
- Because there is nothing you can do in emergencies like cracks. (Male in his 50s)
Many of those who want to request during the off-season cited two reasons: "wanting to keep costs down" and "wanting careful work done." There were noticeable concerns that the work might become sloppy because contractors and craftsmen have less leeway during the busy season.
On the other hand, from those who do not want to request during the off-season, there were voices saying, "it should be done when necessary" and "you can't choose the timing in an emergency." This is a realistic opinion that in urgent cases, such as cracks in exterior walls or roof leaks, there is no time to worry about whether it's the busy season or not.
■ 64.5% answered they "do not understand" the pros and cons of the off-season
Next, we asked how much they understand about the advantages and disadvantages of requesting during the off-season.

As a result, "do not understand very well" was the most common at 42%, and combined with "do not understand at all" at 22.5%, it became clear that 64.5% of people do not know much about the off-season.
"Somewhat understand" was 28.3%, and "very well understand" remained at 7.3%.
We asked what main advantages and disadvantages they were aware of, so we will introduce some of them.
What do you think are the main advantages?
- Price, quality. (Female in her 20s)
- It seems like they would give a discount. (Male in his 30s)
- You can ask for it cheaply. (Male in his 40s)
- It seems like they would come right away if requested. (Female in her 40s)
- Because the builder also has leeway, the quality will improve. (Male in his 50s)
The three points that many people cited as advantages of the off-season are "costs can be kept down," "reservations are easier to make," and "careful construction can be expected." There were also expectations that because the contractor has more time to spare, they might be more willing to listen closely to the client's requests.
What do you think are the main disadvantages?
- They might cut corners on the construction. (Male in his 40s)
- It doesn't progress when it rains. (Female in her 40s)
- Conversely, it might cost more in some cases. (Male in his 40s)
- It takes time to complete, so daily life becomes inconvenient. (Male in his 50s)
- The painting season is bad. (Male in his 50s)
As for disadvantages, concerns were centered around weather risks during the summer and winter, which fall into the off-season. It seems many people are worried that high temperatures in midsummer, long rains during the rainy season, and low temperatures and snow accumulation in winter might affect the quality of the painting.
■ What information is required to make a request with peace of mind?
Finally, we asked what information or advice would give them peace of mind to ask a contractor when deciding the timing to request exterior wall painting.
When deciding the timing to request exterior wall painting, what information or advice do you think would give you peace of mind to ask a contractor?
- I think I could request with peace of mind if they give advice taking various possibilities into account. (Male in his 10s)
- I think I could request with peace of mind if they explain the appropriate timing and cost of the construction. (Male in his 30s)
- Since I don't know when the busy season is in the first place, if there is a difference depending on the season, I want them to start explaining from there. (Female in her 40s)
- It would be reassuring to know what time of year the finish can be done beautifully. (Female in her 40s)
- I want them to clarify the cost and the number of working days. (Male in his 40s)
The information required to make a request with peace of mind can be summarized into three points: "differences in cost by season," "optimal construction timing," and "track record and reviews of contractors."
Considering that the majority of people do not even know when the busy season is in the first place, it seems necessary to provide basic information carefully.
■ Conclusion
In this survey, only 8% of people knew that spring is the busy season for exterior wall painting. On the other hand, over 80% answered that they would like to make requests during the off-season, indicating a high level of interest in cost and quality.
However, only about 35% of people fully understand the advantages and disadvantages of the off-season, highlighting the current situation where many people are trying to make a judgment while lacking information.
When considering exterior wall painting, gathering information in advance such as cost differences by season and weather risks, and deciding the timing of the request after consulting with a reliable contractor, would likely be the first step towards a satisfying finish.
