While the three major U.S. indices rose, the Philadelphia Semiconductor Index closed lower. Taiwan's stock market opened lower on April 16, 2025, starting at 45,511.98 points, down 119.61 points. As TSMC and other major electronics stocks weakened ahead of TSMC's earnings call scheduled for this afternoon, the index continued to fall, reaching a low of 45,033 points—down over 600 points. Early trading volume reached TWD 1.02 trillion.

Major stocks declined across the board. TSMC (2330-TW), whose earnings call is set for this afternoon, fell by TWD 15, or about 0.5%. MediaTek (2454-TW) dropped TWD 110, or about 2%. Hon Hai (2317-TW) remained flat. Delta Electronics (2308-TW) fell about 2%, and ASE Holding (3711-TW) declined about 1%.

With a rebound in bicycle demand, related stocks rose. Giant (9921-TW) hit the upper limit, Merida (9914-TW) gained about 9%, and KMC (5306-TW) rose about 8%.

Oil & gas and petrochemical stocks continued to strengthen. CPC Corporation (6505-TW) rose about 7%, Formosa Plastics (1301-TW) gained about 2%, and Formosa Chemicals (1326-TW) rose about 1%.
