NewNorm Design Co., Ltd. (hereinafter NND) and Hakuten Co., Ltd. (hereinafter Hakuten) have signed a joint development agreement for a resource circularity visualization system* in construction projects, with the aim of contributing to the more sustainable development of the construction industry.
In this joint development, the resource circularity visualization mechanism developed by Hakuten will be implemented into the architectural circularity platform 'matinno' operated by NND. This will expand the functions of 'matinno', allowing users to more efficiently calculate resource circularity rates in architectural design.
Moving forward, NND and Hakuten plan to step-by-step improve the system through demonstration tests to enhance its functionality and convenience, while also deploying joint marketing activities to promote its widespread use.
Regarding this joint contract, Ryosuke Suzuki, General Manager of the Sustainability Promotion Department and Head of the Circular Design Room at Hakuten, stated the following:
'Suppose we create a beautiful and functional space that conveys the concept of resource circulation. Measuring and disclosing exactly how much circularity that space or event actually possessed will lead to increased conviction and persuasiveness regarding the space's concept. Furthermore, through this joint development with NND, it becomes possible for us to publish those results and analyses, passing on specific methods and improvement hints for enhancing circularity to the next initiative. I believe that the accumulation of such verification and sharing will spawn new practices and act as a catalyst to accelerate the realization of a circular society.'
Additionally, Farah Talaie, CEO of NND, stated:
'I feel truly energized that matinno and Hakuten are jointly tackling the complex challenges of the circular economy and reporting. There is a massive gap between the desire to be sustainable and proving that impact with concrete data, but this collaboration feels like the missing piece of that puzzle. By fusing matinno's innovative design methods with Hakuten's expertise in communication and space, we are not just talking about the 'closed loop', but actually building the infrastructure to quantify it. We strongly expect this partnership to be the push needed to overcome obstacles in evaluating brands' sustainable designs and materials, moving towards a truly transparent circular model. True sustainability in architecture is something we can only achieve by joining forces.'
'matinno', which has undergone repeated research and demonstration as a SaaS platform for sustainable building materials since its conception in 2018, was officially launched in January of this year. A 2-week free trial is currently available on the official website below.

*What is the Resource Circularity Visualization System?
'Resource circularity visualization' in events and space design is a method to measure and visualize the circularity of resources based on the Circular Transition Index (CTI) established by the World Business Council for Sustainable Development (WBCSD).
In this measurement, against the total resources procured for an event or space design, it calculates the 'Circular Inflow Rate', indicating the proportion of renewable resources, and the 'Circular Outflow Rate', indicating the proportion of actually recovered renewable resources against the total resources discharged. Furthermore, based on these, a weighted average is performed to derive the 'Material Circularity Rate', which is an indicator showing the circularity of total resources.
By using this indicator, it becomes possible to quantitatively evaluate exactly how much circularity an event or space design that implemented circular design actually possessed.
