Neurospace Inc. (Headquarters: Sumida-ku, Tokyo; President & CEO: Takanori Kobayashi), which supports health management centered on sleep improvement, was entrusted with Edogawa Ward's "Good Sleep Health Checkup Project." For three years starting from Reiwa 5 (2023) fiscal year, the company provided sleep visualization and behavioral change support using sleep measurement devices to National Health Insurance beneficiaries. This article introduces the outline of this project and the achievements of its three-year initiative.

1. What is Edogawa Ward's "Good Sleep Health Checkup Project"?

This project aims to promote health, such as preventing lifestyle diseases, by visualizing participants' sleep patterns using sleep measurement devices and providing data-based feedback and behavioral change support. The program, based on Neurospace's sleep improvement program "Biz Sleep," was implemented over approximately five weeks. It was designed in three steps: (1) sleep measurement, (2) data visualization and feedback, and (3) practicing actions for sleep improvement, enabling participants to understand their own sleep characteristics and their relationship with lifestyle habits, and to effortlessly work on improving their lifestyle.

2. Who participated over the three years?

Over three years, there were over 300 applications, and the participation rate among applicants improved from 60.3% in Reiwa 5 (2023) fiscal year to 78.1% in Reiwa 7 (2025) fiscal year. The following trends were observed among participants:

【Main characteristics of participants】

・ Many female participants

・ Many participants in their 50s

・ Over half of participants answered "not getting enough rest from sleep" in pre-participation questions

・ Top motivations for participation were "wanting to know my sleep state" and "wanting to improve sleep problems"

By utilizing the opportunity of National Health Insurance checkups to provide information, this project effectively encouraged participation at a time when residents were reviewing their health, successfully drawing their interest.

3. Main Achievements

(1) Improvement in Sleep Satisfaction

Comparing sleep satisfaction before and after the project, the percentage of respondents who answered "satisfied with sleep" significantly increased from 18.5% before the start to 47.3% at the end.

Furthermore, the percentage of respondents who answered "no problem (no hindrance)" regarding daytime sleepiness and decreased concentration improved, suggesting that sleep improvement also leads to an improvement in the quality of daily life (QOL).

(2) Improvement in Sleep Data

Sleep data was analyzed from both "sleep quantity" and "sleep quality" perspectives, using the following four items:

1. Sleep duration difference between weekdays and holidays

2. Variability in wake-up time

3. Deep sleep duration

4. Sleep efficiency

As a result, 91% of participants showed improvement in at least one of the four items, confirming objective sleep data improvement in most participants.

(3) Improvement in Lifestyle Habits

Comparing the practice level of lifestyle habits (10 items) affecting sleep before and after project participation, the practice level improved in many items. In particular, changes in behaviors such as "relaxing habits before bedtime," "reviewing bathing habits," "habit of exposure to morning light," "reviewing meal times," and "practicing moderate exercise" were confirmed. By visualizing sleep data, participants were able to understand the relationship between their lifestyle habits and sleep, leading to concrete behavioral changes.

(4) High Program Satisfaction

When program satisfaction was checked in the post-completion survey, 85% of participants answered "very satisfied" or "satisfied," confirming a high overall evaluation of the program.

4. Participant Voices

The following comments were received from participants in the survey (some summarized):

Insights from Visualization

・ I was able to objectively understand my sleep and learn what I needed to address

・ Checking scores daily felt like a game, and I started looking forward to sleeping

Changes in Awareness and Behavior

・ Measurement data and advice heightened my awareness of sleep

・ It became an opportunity to regulate my daily rhythm

Improvement in Physical Condition / Satisfaction

・ I was troubled by difficulty falling asleep and waking up in the middle of the night, but I felt improvement

・ I would recommend it to family and friends

・ Sleep is an important theme throughout life, and this initiative became a major turning point that influenced my life

・ I was able to participate through the health checkup, which gave me a sense of security, and I'm glad to live in Edogawa Ward, which implements the Good Sleep Health Checkup Project

5. Summary of the 3 Years

In this project, we supported sleep visualization using measurement devices and data-based behavioral change. Many participants joined with the awareness of issues such as "wanting to know my sleep state" and "wanting to improve sleep problems," confirming a high interest in sleep and a need for improvement.

Furthermore, by visualizing sleep data, participants were able to understand the relationship between their lifestyle habits and sleep, leading to concrete behavioral improvements. As a result, both subjective and objective sleep improvements were confirmed.

This case demonstrates the potential for combining sleep visualization with expert support to promote behavioral and attitudinal changes among residents, contributing to an improved quality of life (QOL).
