NE Inc. (Headquarters: Yokohama, Kanagawa Prefecture, CEO: Noriyoshi Higo, hereinafter "NE") has implemented an MCP (Model Context Protocol) server utilizing existing APIs within its SaaS-based EC backend system, "Next Engine".

Through this initiative, we are developing a connectivity infrastructure that allows users to reference and aggregate business data managed on Next Engine, such as orders, sales, inventory, and products, simply by speaking to an AI agent.

Initially, we will support the aggregation of order and sales data, confirmation of store-specific situations, understanding of sales performance by product, checking inventory breakdowns and movement history, and referencing order statuses and individual order information.

Currently, this is limited to referencing and aggregating read-only data; it does not include updating business data or autonomous execution by AI. When retrieving individual order information, personal information fields such as purchaser name, address, phone number, and email address are excluded.

Background: In the era of AI agents, business systems shift from "operating" to "talking to and confirming."

Traditionally, EC operators would open a management screen, search for necessary items, and read information on the screen to check orders, sales, inventory, and order status.

However, with the spread of generative AI and AI agents, the user experience of business systems is changing. The experience of obtaining, aggregating, and summarizing necessary data simply by asking an AI, such as "Tell me this month's sales" or "Check the available inventory for this product," is beginning to expand.

If such an experience becomes practical, EC operators can reduce the time spent on screen operations for data extraction and aggregation, allowing them to allocate more time to value-creation activities like sales promotion planning, product development, and customer support.

NE believes that preparing business data managed on Next Engine to be accurately handled by AI agents is crucial for supporting EC operators in the age of agentic commerce.

From API Manual Refresh to MCP Server Implementation

NE has been working to refresh its API manual to evolve the Next Engine API into a development infrastructure for the AI agent era.

The refreshed API manual utilizes OpenAPI 3.1, Markdown, llms.txt, and other tools to create a structure that is easy for AI agents and AI development support tools, as well as developers, to reference API specifications.

This MCP server implementation is the next step, aimed at establishing a connectivity infrastructure for AI agents to acquire and aggregate business data through the Next Engine API.

Main Business Data Supported by MCP Server

MCP is one of the mechanisms that allows AI agents to connect to external systems and data sources.

In this initiative, we have connected the Next Engine API as an MCP server, creating a connectivity environment where business data such as orders, sales, inventory, and order status can be acquired and aggregated by AI agents and MCP-compatible clients.

It primarily supports the following business data:

Order and Sales Information Users can check the number of orders, total amount, order status by store, and sales performance by product for a specified period.

Inventory and Product Information Based on product codes or names, users can check stock quantities, allocated quantities, available stock quantities, and inventory movement history.

Order Status Information Users can check order statuses, payment statuses, important checks, and details of individual orders.

For example, in response to queries like "Tell me this month's order count and sales," "Compare sales by store," "What is the available stock for this product?" "How many orders are unpaid?" or "Check the status of order with slip number XXX," an AI agent will acquire and aggregate the necessary information through the Next Engine API.

Furthermore, functions involving date specifications have a set upper limit to suppress the load on the API server. Currently, data updates or autonomous execution by AI are not supported.

Future Development: Application to NE LINKS and Expansion of Scope

NE plans to gradually expand the scope of business data that AI agents can reference and aggregate based on the MCP server implemented this time. Additionally, we are considering applications to features that will make it easier for EC operators to grasp daily situations, such as AI summarization and notifications within the smartphone app "NE LINKS."

Looking further ahead, we envision a more significant change. In an era where AI agents handle everything from product comparison and selection to purchasing and transactions, ensuring that EC operators' product and inventory information is correctly delivered to AI agents—in other words, an environment where businesses directly deliver products to agents (Direct to Agent)—will become a new premise of commerce.

Under its Vision "Commerce OS for the Agent Era" and Mission "Build the Invisible Engine," NE will continue to evolve Next Engine into a commerce OS for the AI agent era.
