Why We Stood Up
In an image survey targeting high school students in Okayama Prefecture, Notre Dame Seishin University's scores for "matching the times" and "lively" were about half compared to neighboring universities.
Catholic, and a women's university. From these two words, it seems to be often perceived as "somehow old-fashioned" or "strict." Before enrollment, we ourselves might have felt a little that way.
However, after actually spending time here, it was quite different from that image.
We want to convey this "difference" with our own words and videos. With that in mind, two months ago, in February 2026, the "Seishin Real PR Department," a student staff organization of the Public Relations Office, was born. Six students from the new second and third years. From April, we aim to welcome new students and establish a team of about 10 people.
We are not particularly "good" at this
We are not naturally good at talking to people. We are not accustomed to posting on social media, nor do we have experience in video production.
Nevertheless, with only the desire to "convey our university's story ourselves," we are moving forward step by step, by trial and error.
During interviews at the Hooding Ceremony and Graduation Ceremony in March, there were many situations where we spoke to or were spoken to by strangers, such as graduates, their parents, and guests. We were so focused on talking that we sometimes stumbled over our words or used incorrect honorifics. A member who walked around in unfamiliar pumps realized she had injured her little toe. When we tried to shoot an interview video, we failed to press the start button, and the recording only began after the entire interview was over.
Failed recordings, nervousness with strangers, awkward responses. There were many failures. But we believe that beyond each of these, we are becoming a little stronger, and so we continue. Camera composition, how to use editing software, how to approach people for interviews – these are all things we have yet to learn. We are gradually acquiring these skills, checking with each other, "Is this okay?"
What We Noticed During Our First Interviews
The first step in our activities was covering the Hooding Ceremony on March 12th and the Graduation Ceremony on March 14th.
As we walked around campus with cameras, we realized there was more we wanted to convey than we had initially thought.
- The campus looks great on video
The main building, chapel, and water mirror, which are nationally registered tangible cultural properties built in 1929. Historic buildings and the new Trinity Hall stand naturally side by side, making every shot picturesque. Each time we create a video to share, the number of places we want to film increases.
- Learning transcends departmental boundaries
Seishin advocates liberal arts, allowing students to learn various subjects regardless of their affiliated faculty or department. It's not just a motto; we can truly learn in ways that aren't confined to our own specialties, feeling freer and broadening our perspectives more than we expected.
- Our seniors were kind
The fourth-year seniors who responded to us during the graduation ceremony interviews were calm, warm, and composed. After the filming ended, they turned to us and said, "Good luck." That was the most memorable moment of the interview. Being at this university with such kind people, we naturally thought, "In four years, we can become like them too."
- Time alone is naturally accepted
In high school, I sometimes felt a little self-conscious when studying alone. But here, many people value their alone time, and it's accepted as a matter of course. Being able to spend time in a calm, peaceful atmosphere is one of the good things about this university that I discovered after attending.
Not "Outdated," But What's Here
A Catholic university, a women's university. If you only look at the categories, it might sometimes be classified as "not matching the times."
However, once inside, there is a daily life no different from a regular university. It's a feeling that "positive elements" are quietly added to it.
Being kind to people, being considerate of others. These are subtly present not only in the curriculum but also throughout daily life. The calmness and peacefulness that arise precisely because it is a women's university are also important conditions for us to feel at home.
It seems that kind people naturally gather at this university.
Our Dream
Our dream is to be able to convey through our own communication that "Seishin is a good university."
When I saw the numbers from the image survey, I thought it was a waste. And I also thought, "We might be able to change it with our own hands."
We are a small team of six, just launched. Video production and SNS posting are still in their early stages. However, we believe there are things that only "we," who attend this university, can convey.
Through these activities, we want to grow little by little and eventually pursue careers in advertising and media. And to all students who, like us, think, "My university is actually a good place, but..." — why don't we talk about our own place, in our own words, together?
Quietly, but surely. We will send out our message from here.
