Narish Cosmetics Co., Ltd. (Representative: Hiroyoshi Muraoka, Headquarters: Osaka City, Fukushima Ward) entered into a sponsorship agreement with professional tennis player Honori Oyama in April of this year. This partnership inspired the company to support initiatives aimed at promoting lifelong sports in Miki City, Hyogo Prefecture, which has been home to our main factory since 1967 and is also Honori Oyama's hometown. The city's initiative is centered around the theme "A town where people can live healthy and fulfilling lives through sports." This survey was conducted to understand the sports participation status of young people and their sunscreen usage, particularly for outdoor sports, in order to better support future sports engagement. (Survey Period: June 8-15, 2026; Survey Method: Self-administered internet survey; Target Audience: 2,109 men and women aged 15-24; Breakdown: 1,085 males, 1,024 females. Note: The number of respondents varies depending on the question, and 'n' is indicated for each chart.)

【Survey Results】
1 Over 60% of men and women aged 15-24 do not regularly participate in sports.
We asked 2,109 men and women aged 15-24 (1,085 males, 1,024 females) via the internet whether they regularly participate in sports (at least once a week), excluding school or university classes. (If they participated in multiple sports, they were asked about the sport they spent the most time on.) Overall, the largest group, 62.8%, answered "do not participate." This was followed by "participate in sports through school clubs" at 11.9%, and then "participate in sports without a specific commitment" at 9.4%.
Looking at this by gender, men participate in sports at a slightly higher rate, but the difference with women is less than 3%, which is not a significant gap. When examining the environment in which sports are played, the proportion of women who answered "participate in sports through community clubs, circles, or lessons" and "participate in sports with family" was higher.
By age, the percentage of people participating in sports decreases by 5.3 percentage points for men and 3.2 percentage points for women from the 15-19 age group to the 20-24 age group. While it is understandable that the proportion of people participating in sports through school clubs decreases as they get older due to the discontinuation of club activities, it is evident that only a limited number of individuals continue to participate in sports in other settings after leaving clubs. In recent years, with the ongoing abolition of school clubs, it is conceivable that opportunities to start sports will decrease, and the difficulty of enjoying sports and continuing lifelong sports participation can be anticipated.
2 Sunscreen usage rate: Approximately 40% for men, approximately 80% for women.
We asked about current sunscreen usage (all applicable situations were selected, so the total does not add up to 100%). Overall, "use when going to places with strong sunlight" was the most common at 37.5%, followed closely by "use for daily outings such as commuting to school or work" at 27.9%. "Use even on days spent indoors with no plans to go out" was also 6.2%, indicating an increase in usage situations. "Do not use" was selected by 38.8%.
We examined this by age and gender. While no significant differences were observed by age, the difference between genders was very large. Particularly for women, "do not use" was 17.8%, which means that when subtracted from 100%, 82.2% use sunscreen, suggesting it is almost an essential item. Among women aged 15-19, 81.2% use it, and among those aged 20-24, 83.1% use it, indicating that the habit of daily sunscreen use is established at a young age. Women in this age group also have a high rate of 10.2% who "use even on days spent indoors with no plans to go out," suggesting that the habit of using sunscreen as part of their regular skincare routine is beginning to take hold.
3 Sports activities engaged in, in order: Track and field, Badminton, Basketball.
We asked 784 men and women who reported regularly participating in sports about the types of sports they engage in. No significant biases were observed by age or gender (if they participated in multiple sports, they were asked to choose the one they spent the most time on). Among men aged 15-19, the order was "Track and field," "Baseball/Softball," and "Basketball." For men aged 20-24, it was "Soccer," "Baseball/Softball," and "Basketball." Among women aged 15-19, the order was "Badminton," "Dance," and "Track and field." For women aged 20-24, it was "Dance," "Volleyball," and "Soccer" (tied). Although we intended to provide a comprehensive list of major sports, the fact that approximately 20% of both men and women selected "Other" suggests a broad range of sports activities.
We asked 764 individuals (excluding "e-sports") who regularly participate in sports about their primary location of activity. "Mainly outdoors" was 38.6%, and "mainly indoors" was 40.3%, indicating a near 50/50 split. However, in recent years, due to the impact of extreme heat, it appears that people are choosing their sports locations and practice methods based on the specific sport and current conditions. The sports most frequently performed outdoors were "Soccer," "Baseball/Softball," and "Tennis," in that order. The sports most frequently performed indoors were "Table Tennis," "Swimming," and "Badminton," in that order.
4 Women who regularly participate in outdoor sports have a 100% sunscreen usage rate.
We asked 602 men and women who reported regularly participating in sports whether they use sunscreen while playing sports. Overall, 34.2% answered "always use," 32.4% answered "usually use," and only 16.6% answered "do not use." We examined this by age and gender, and found significant differences not only by gender but also by age. The highest percentage of "do not use" was among women aged 15-19, with a higher proportion not using sunscreen compared to men in the same age group. For women aged 20-24, the "do not use" rate dropped significantly to 8.0%, while the "always use" rate increased to 49.4%. The "always use" rate for men increased from 18.2% to 39.6%, and for women, it increased from 26.2% to 49.4%, nearly doubling.
Furthermore, while the environment for sports is not strictly divided into outdoor and indoor based on the sport itself, we hypothesized that the environment significantly influences usage. Based on the data from section 3, we cross-referenced the types of sports with sunscreen usage. Sports primarily performed outdoors are represented in orange, and sports primarily performed indoors are in gray. Although the sample sizes (n) were smaller when broken down by sport and gender, individuals participating in sports predominantly performed outdoors showed higher usage rates. Specifically, among women, the highest rate of "always use" was 66.7% for "Baseball/Softball." For sports predominantly performed outdoors, the proportion of those who "do not use" sunscreen was 0% for "Baseball/Softball," "Track and field," "Soccer," "Tennis," and "Skateboarding." Sports predominantly performed indoors resulted in lower sunscreen usage rates compared to those performed outdoors.
5 Individuals who do not participate in sports also have a low sunscreen usage rate in non-sports related sun exposure situations.
Finally, we cross-referenced sunscreen usage with regular sports participation. Those who answered "do not participate in sports" had the lowest sunscreen usage rate at 49.9%, less than half. They also had the lowest rates for "use for daily outings such as commuting to school or work" and "use for extended outdoor activities such as outdoor events and sports," showing a tendency for lower usage in other situations as well. Among those who do participate in sports, individuals who answered "participate in sports with family" and "participate in sports through community clubs, circles, or lessons" had higher sunscreen usage rates than those who answered "participate in sports through school clubs" or "participate in sports without a specific commitment."
【Overall Considerations】
The environment for sunscreen use has changed significantly over the past 30 years. Sunscreen became common in the late 1980s to 1990s, influenced by the "sunburn boom" of the 1960s-1970s and the subsequent concerns about spots and other issues. At that time, development was primarily focused on use in summer sports and outdoor situations. Times have changed, and sunscreen is now an item needed by people of all ages and genders as part of their daily skincare routine, rather than being used only in special situations. While our company's development has also shifted towards general daily use rather than focusing on special situations, the sponsorship agreement with Honori Oyama prompted us to conduct this survey, as we were reminded that sunscreen is used not only in everyday situations but also by people who use it to genuinely improve their sports performance. A significant finding was that individuals who do not participate in sports also have a higher rate of not using sunscreen in non-sports related situations. Individual survey responses revealed that people who do not participate in sports lack opportunities to purchase sunscreen, and therefore do not own it, leading to its non-use in non-sports situations. Furthermore, individuals who do not regularly participate in sports do not purchase sunscreen because even if they buy it for a single outdoor event, they would not use it afterward. Our company believes that the appropriate formulation and usage method for sunscreen vary depending on the user and the situation. We aim to provide sunscreens and related information that suit each person and situation, thereby contributing to a more comfortable daily life.
