[Survey Overview]
◆ Participation rate in career development activities in May was 32.9%, up 13.8 percentage points from the previous month
The proportion of students expected to graduate in 2028 who participated in internships or other career development activities in May was 32.9%, up 13.8 percentage points from the previous month. Of these, 7.0% (up 3.0 points) participated in 'internships (programs of five or more days including practical experience)', 9.0% (up 5.2 points) in 'job experiences (short-term programs allowing work experience)', and 22.5% (up 8.1 points) in 'open company events and career education programs (primarily for understanding companies and jobs)'. [Figures 1, 2]
◆ Approximately 50% of students are saving (or wish to save) for future career development or job-hunting activities. There is a significant difference in savings purposes between students in the Kanto region and those elsewhere, particularly for 'transportation costs' and 'accommodation costs'.
When asked whether they are saving for career development or job-hunting activities, 49.6% ('currently saving': 14.9% + 'want to save but not doing so': 34.7%) indicated an intention to save. Regarding savings purposes, 'transportation costs' ranked highest at 82.1%, followed by 'living expenses during periods without part-time work' at 57.3%. Furthermore, when comparing students in the Kanto region with those elsewhere, a 12.1 percentage point difference was observed for 'transportation costs', and a significant 29.7 percentage point difference for 'accommodation costs'. According to another survey※, for the class of 2026, 52.2% of corporate internships and job experience programs were conducted entirely in person. This suggests students are considering saving in anticipation of distant program locations and potential lack of transportation cost reimbursement.

◆ Around 30% of students experienced document screening during internships or other career development activities. The top experiences students can currently highlight are 'part-time job experience' and 'academic studies, research, or seminar activities'.
In May, 32.4% of students experienced document screening or interviews during internships or other career development activities, where they were asked about 'gakuchika' (what they focused on during their student life) and similar topics. Regarding their thoughts on gakuchika, 49.3% responded 'I want to actively pursue experiences that can become gakuchika', the highest percentage, followed by 40.8% who said 'I feel anxious because I have fewer experiences to talk about as gakuchika compared to others'. Additionally, when comparing experiences students can currently highlight with those they wish to gain in the future, only 12.0% currently consider 'self-improvement such as obtaining qualifications' as something they can highlight, while 30.3% want to gain such experiences in the future—a difference of 18.3 percentage points. This indicates that while students base their strengths on their academic and part-time work experiences, they are increasingly aware of the need to accumulate experiences that enhance their expertise and practical understanding.
[Researcher Comment]
The results show that students from outside the Kanto region are more concerned about travel and accommodation costs associated with internships and job-hunting activities. Lowering participation barriers through corporate support such as transportation subsidies and accommodation assistance could expand student participation opportunities. Additionally, with document screening now common in internships and career development activities, many students currently recognize their part-time jobs and academic activities as strengths. It is important for students to deepen their self-analysis by building on these existing experiences and accumulating new challenges, ultimately articulating their strengths effectively.
