Mitsubishi UFJ Research & Consulting Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President: Masakazu Ikeda) and Injestar Inc. (Headquarters: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; President: Wu Hsi-Chang) have compiled the results for the first quarter of 2026 for the 'Inbound Purchase Intent Index,' an index that measures the purchasing intent of foreign tourists visiting retail stores nationwide, as follows. ◆ Trends in the First Quarter of 2026 ・The Current Level DI[1] was 55, a slight decrease of 4 points from the previous quarter. ・The Current Conditions DI was 50, a decrease of 7 points from the previous quarter. ・The Outlook DI was 55, a slight decrease of 4 points from the previous quarter. *1 In this index, calculated values corresponding to periods where the average number of respondents is below 50 are treated as reference values. ◆ About the Inbound Purchase Intent Index This index was developed for the purpose of accurately and promptly grasping trends in purchasing by foreign tourists visiting Japan, to be used as a reference for management decisions, economic judgments, and other related fields. The survey is conducted twice a month, at mid-month and at the end of the month, with the questionnaire collection period being the week following each point. The survey targets sales staff dispatched by Injestar Inc. to retail stores nationwide, and all products handled at each store are the subject items. To sensitively detect trends in the purchasing intent of foreign tourists, those in charge of serving foreign customers at the storefront are the survey subjects. The main survey items are the following three: > Current judgment on the level of purchasing intent by foreign tourists (Level) > Current judgment on the direction of purchasing intent by foreign tourists compared to the previous month (Direction) and the reasons for it > Outlook judgment on the future direction of purchasing intent by foreign tourists (Direction) and the reasons for it The judgments collected from the survey subjects are scored as shown in the table below, and the average value is presented as an index (Diffusion Index, DI) ranging from a minimum of 0 to a maximum of 100 points. Therefore, in this index, a value greater than 50 means 'strong purchasing intent,' and a value smaller than 50 means 'weak purchasing intent.' ○ Inbound Purchase Intent Index Value *2 *2 The quarterly series is the simple average of the monthly series (before rounding), rounded to the nearest integer. *3 *3 The monthly series is the simple average of the original series, rounded to the nearest integer.
