Born in Kamakura, Kanagawa Prefecture in 1937. Anatomist. Graduated from the University of Tokyo School of Medicine. Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo. Received the Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities in 1989 for "Karada no Mikata" (How to See the Body). His 2003 book "Baka no Kabe" became a bestseller, winning the "New Words and Buzzwords Award" and the Mainichi Shuppan Bunka Award Special Prize. He has authored numerous other books, including "Yui-ron" (Brain Theory), "Yuigon." (Last Will.), and "Jinsei no Kabe" (Life's Wall). He is also known for his love of insects and established the "Insect Mound" at Kencho-ji Temple in Kamakura, where he holds an annual memorial service.
