Born in Kamakura City, Kanagawa Prefecture in 1937 (Showa 12). Anatomist. Graduated from the University of Tokyo School of Medicine. Emeritus Professor at the University of Tokyo. In 1989 (Heisei 1), he received the Suntory Prize for Social Sciences and Humanities for "Karada no Mikata" (How to View the Body). In 2003, "Baka no Kabe" (The Wall of Fools) became a bestseller and received the New Word/Buzzword Award and the Mainichi Publishing Culture Award Special Prize. His other works include "Yuino-ron" (The Brain Theory), "Yuigon." (Last Will.), and "Jinsei no Kabe" (The Wall of Life). Also known as a great insect lover, he established an insect mound at Kencho-ji Temple in Kamakura and holds an annual memorial service.
