Asahi Group Japan, Ltd. (hereinafter Asahi Group Japan), Trial Holdings Inc. (hereinafter Trial), Mitsubishi Shokuhin Co., Ltd. (hereinafter Mitsubishi Shokuhin), and NTT Corporation (hereinafter NTT) will establish an ISAC (Information Sharing and Analysis Center), the first in the distribution industry, in mid-April 2026 along with its founders. This framework will serve for information sharing and analysis beyond corporate boundaries in the distribution industry, centering on food, beverages, and daily necessities, launching an initiative to improve the "collective defense capability" in cybersecurity across the entire distribution industry.
1. Background and Aims of Establishing the Retail ISAC
In recent years, cyberattacks have continued to become more sophisticated and ingenious. Cases have emerged where targeted attacks on specific companies in the supply chain cause massive damage to the business activities of the entire supply chain. The distribution industry, focusing particularly on food, beverages, and daily necessities, consists of a closely coordinated three-tier structure of manufacturing, wholesale, and retail. A cyber incident occurring at a single company poses a risk of extensive impact on society and people's lives through manufacturing halts, logistics disruptions, and store closures.
Furthermore, in responding to cyber incidents recently, there are limits to how much individual companies or organizations can handle on their own. ISAC initiatives are gaining attention. By cross-industry sharing and analysis of information on security measures, IoC*1 information of attackers and vulnerability information that are easy targets in the distribution industry can be swiftly shared with ISAC member companies. This is expected to improve the defense capability against cyberattacks across the entire supply chain.
Given this situation, Asahi Group Japan, Trial, Mitsubishi Shokuhin, and NTT, together with the founders, have decided to establish the "Retail ISAC" to strengthen cybersecurity measures in the distribution industry.
2. Purpose and Activities of the Retail ISAC
The Retail ISAC will supplement the limits of individual company responses and serve as a framework to prepare for cyber risks as an entire industry. Participating companies will share and analyze information based on a relationship of trust and lead it to effective measures.
The purposes of this ISAC are as follows:
1. Collection, Analysis, and Sharing of Threat and Incident Information
To grasp and share signs of cyberattacks and damage cases across the three business types of manufacturing, wholesale, and retail, aiming to raise awareness and advance initial response within the industry.
2. Organization of Best Practices in the Distribution Industry
To bring together each company's initiatives and knowledge regarding various security guidelines, organizing and sharing them as practical guidelines based on industry characteristics.
3. Information Security Awareness and Human Resource Development
To aim at improving the skills of practitioners, management, and administrators, raising the level of response capabilities on the ground through study sessions, exercises, etc.
After the establishment of the Retail ISAC, working groups will be set up for each purpose to deepen discussions throughout the year and provide regular performance reports to member companies. Member companies can receive security measure knowledge specialized for the distribution industry.
Through the above, we will contribute to the safety and security of people's lives by suppressing the occurrence of supply disruptions due to cyber incidents and ensuring a stable supply of food and daily necessities.
