Mitsubishi Home Co., Ltd. (President and CEO: Tetsuya Sakio) will sponsor the special exhibition "DAI-NANKYOKU-EXPO," commemorating the 70th anniversary of Japan's Antarctic observation program, to be held at Miraikan (Koto City, Tokyo) from July 1, 2026 (Wed) to September 27, 2026 (Sun).

Antarctica remains largely unaffected by human activities and preserves the Earth's original environment. As such, it serves as a crucial research base for understanding current environmental conditions and future climate change. Japan's Antarctic observation teams have conducted long-term, intensive monitoring of ice sheets, oceans, and atmospheric circulation, contributing significantly to clarifying global climate change mechanisms.

The special exhibition "DAI-NANKYOKU-EXPO" commemorates 70 years of Japan's Antarctic observation program and is an experiential exhibition showcasing past observation activities and challenges. Visitors will assume the role of "Special Antarctic Observers" and experience, through immersive videos and diverse interactive exhibits, the various missions carried out by the observation teams.

Since receiving the order for the 10th Residential Building in 1968, Mitsubishi Home has provided a total of 36 buildings (with a combined floor area of approximately 5,900m2). Since 1975, the company has dispatched employees as construction professionals to the observation teams※1, with 31 individuals in total involved in on-site construction and maintenance, supporting building operations at Japan's Syowa Station in Antarctica. Mitsubishi Home has continued its involvement in the Antarctic observation program for over half a century, believing that Antarctic and polar scientific research are essential for understanding Earth's environment and achieving a sustainable society. The company is sponsoring this special exhibition, which encourages thinking about Earth's future and offers authentic learning experiences, as it strongly resonates with these values.

On August 22 (Sat) during the exhibition period, Mitsubishi Home will join other sponsoring companies in participating in the side event "Summer Vacation Independent Research Festival ~Let's Learn! Antarctic Observation Support Team~." Through talk sessions and workshops, the event will clearly explain the lesser-known "jobs in Antarctica."

Through its sponsorship of this special exhibition and related events, Mitsubishi Home will contribute to nurturing the next generation and promoting greater understanding of Earth's environment. The company will continue its support for polar science and sustainable society development by maintaining its involvement in Antarctic construction and dispatching employees to the observation teams.

※1: Employees are seconded to the National Institute of Polar Research (NIPR), part of the Inter-University Research Institute Corporation, Research Organization of Information and Systems, before joining the observation teams.

Overview of the Side Event "Summer Vacation Independent Research Festival ~Let's Learn! Antarctic Observation Support Team~"

As part of the special exhibition "DAI-NANKYOKU-EXPO," sponsoring companies will jointly host the side event "Summer Vacation Independent Research Festival ~Let's Learn! Antarctic Observation Support Team~." This event will feature representatives from sponsoring companies and former members of the Antarctic observation teams, who will clearly explain the little-known "jobs in Antarctica" through talk sessions and workshops. This one-day special event will also provide ideas for students' summer vacation independent research projects. Participation in this event is free, even for those who do not have a ticket to the "DAI-NANKYOKU-EXPO" exhibition.

Mitsubishi Home's Event Program Details

1. Talk Session: "Stories of Buildings at Syowa Station: Secrets of Architecture in Extremely Cold Antarctica"

Syowa Station in Antarctica often experiences minimum temperatures below minus 40°C. How is it possible to live comfortably inside buildings under such harsh conditions? This session will provide an engaging explanation of building structures and design features. Through hands-on experiments demonstrating heat transfer and interactive experiences revealing the strength of buildings, participants will discover the secrets of architecture in Antarctica.

2. Workshop: "Let's Build an Antarctic Base Together!"

If you were a member of an Antarctic observation team, what kind of building would you create? Wearing helmets, participants will learn firsthand about "wood panel adhesive construction methods," a technique used in buildings at Syowa Station, Antarctica, by assembling a base structure approximately 140 cm tall. This interactive workshop allows participants to enjoyably learn about the architectural techniques and wisdom that support human life in extreme cold environments, including handling actual hardware used on-site. Upon completion, participants will receive a "Junior Antarctic Carpenter Certification Certificate."

Event details and schedules are subject to change. For the latest information, please visit the official website of the special exhibition "DAI-NANKYOKU-EXPO" (https://dainankyokuten.jp).
