The Japan Private Railway Association (Secretariat: Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo; Chairman: Takehiro Sugiyama) has been participating in the Keidanren's Commitment to a Low Carbon Society (now the Carbon Neutral Action Plan) since 2013, advancing decarbonization efforts. In November 2022, we formulated a new 'Vision for 2050 Carbon Neutrality' and established our FY2030 targets.
We are pleased to announce that we have achieved our FY2030 target of a '46% reduction in CO2 emissions compared to FY2013' (total operating electricity for the 16 major private railway companies*) in FY2024, six years ahead of schedule.
Regarding the setting of new future targets, we will carefully consider them while taking into account the trends of the government, Keidanren, and the circumstances of our member companies.

Recognizing that railways are a transport mode with an extremely low environmental impact and can contribute to reducing overall national emissions, the Japan Private Railway Association is actively promoting initiatives that contribute to modal shift. Notably, since 2023, we have implemented a joint environmental awareness poster campaign for three consecutive years in collaboration with the JR Group and others to promote the environmental advantages of railways. The entire railway industry, not just private railways, is working together toward carbon neutrality. Furthermore, in 2024, we began distributing manga and videos that explain eco-friendly railways in an easy-to-understand manner, aiming to encourage people to actively choose railways as a means of transportation.
With this achievement of our target, we will continue to put even greater effort into these initiatives to promote modal shift.
