As the return to office gains momentum, the non-taxable limit for meal subsidies (Note 1) will be raised in April 2026 due to national tax reform, for the first time in approximately 40 years. Amidst the emphasis on improving real wages and human capital management, employee support through welfare benefits has become one of the critical management issues for companies.
Minna no Shokushoku not only provides delicious meals from famous restaurants, including those listed in Tabelog's Top 100 Restaurants, but also offers a new lunch experience that enhances organizational engagement, where "people naturally gather because it's delicious" and "conversations naturally arise." It has been adopted by a wide range of companies, from large corporations to startups. This time, we interviewed the restaurant partners who support these flavors about why they decided to provide company cafeteria meals and the changes they experienced after joining, and we are releasing it as an interview article.
*Note 1: Regarding the non-taxable limit for meal subsidies
This is a system where income tax is not imposed on meal expenses provided by companies to employees (and can be recorded as welfare expenses) if certain conditions are met. The non-taxable limit, which was previously 3,500 yen (excluding tax) per month, will be raised to 7,500 yen per month in April 2026 due to tax reform, for the first time in approximately 40 years.
■ Reasons for a Small Business to Join "Minna no Shokushoku"
"Kisuke," a small business run by the owner and his wife, joined this service early on. They had previously considered participating in events or operating food trucks to secure revenue outside the restaurant, but initial investment and the uncertainty of operating schedules were hurdles, they said.
Amidst this, upon hearing about "Minna no Shokushoku," they were surprised, exclaiming, "Wow, that's incredibly easy!" at the system where the operating side provides all cutlery and sales environment, allowing restaurants to focus solely on cooking. They found it advantageous compared to delivery services, which posed challenges in balancing with the restaurant's peak hours, and felt the potential for a new revenue stream, leading them to decide to participate.
■ Changes After Joining
Restaurants constantly face the risk of significant sales fluctuations due to external factors such as weather, temperature, and rising prices. However, the stable sales outlook provided by "Minna no Shokushoku" has become a psychological support, they say. "If this company cafeteria business grows in the future, it could surpass the sales of our physical restaurant. The potential to increase sales to this extent without expanding the number of stores is the biggest appeal for any restaurant," they stated, expressing that they continue to feel the sales potential as off-store revenue even after starting to provide the service.
