"Artists Gathered in Cafes" - From Impressionism to Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Picasso

Exhibition Period: Saturday, June 13, 2026 - Wednesday, September 23, 2026

Organizers: Mitsubishi Ichigokan Museum, The Hiroshima Museum of Art

In late 19th-century Paris, Manet and artists who would later be known as Impressionists gathered in cafes to engage in lively discussions. While modern cafes are places of relaxation, the cafes, cabarets, and dance halls of that era were not only places for dining and entertainment but also hubs for social interaction and the birth of new art. This marked the beginning of a new era where art merged with the public, breaking away from the official Salons.

In 1897, inspired by the famous Montmartre establishment "Le Chat Noir" (The Black Cat), the Catalan painter Casas opened "Els Quatre Gats" (The Four Cats) in Barcelona. The young Picasso frequented this establishment. Influenced by the pleasure and solitude depicted by Toulouse-Lautrec and Casas in their cafe scenes, Picasso's work moved towards his "Blue Period."

This exhibition showcases the spread of art born in "cafes" through approximately 130 works, including masterpieces by the Impressionists, Van Gogh, Toulouse-Lautrec, and Picasso, as well as the treasured work "Magdalena" by Casas, a jewel of Barcelona.
