Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Asia Pacific Pte. Ltd. (hereinafter referred to as MHI-AP), the Asia-Pacific regional headquarters of Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, has received an order from the Singapore National Environment Agency (NEA) for boiler modification work at the "Tuas South Incineration Plant (TSIP)" located in the Tuas district of western Singapore. The project aims to stabilize the waste receiving capacity of the stoker-type incinerator* and extend its operational period, with completion scheduled for the third quarter of fiscal year 2027. The modification work will be carried out by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Environmental & Chemical Engineering Co., Ltd. (MHIEC, President: Nobuhiro Noguchi, Headquarters: Yokohama City, Nishi-ku), a company within the Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group.
TSIP was completed in 2000, designed and constructed by Mitsubishi Heavy Industries. It has a processing capacity of 3,000 tons per day and is operated and maintained by the NEA.
For this modification, MHIEC will be responsible for design, construction, and operational support. Singapore faces the challenge of ensuring stable plant operation while maintaining waste processing capacity. MHIEC will leverage its expertise gained from designing and constructing the existing facility to propose optimal modification scope for extending the operational period, and incorporate design changes for some of the boiler tubes to be replaced, aiming to achieve both processing volume maintenance and stable operation. Post-completion, they will also provide support for stable plant operation.
MHIEC has a track record of delivering a total of four waste incineration power plants in Singapore, starting with the 'Tuas Incineration Plant (TIP)' which began operation in 1986. In Singapore, the company is focusing not only on traditional equipment supply, facility design, and construction, but also on facility business operations and after-sales services, including operational support.
The Mitsubishi Heavy Industries Group will continue to contribute to the decarbonization of energy through the stabilization and improvement of waste processing capacity in Singapore and energy recovery from waste.
* A stoker-type incinerator (stoker furnace) is an incinerator that burns waste by supplying air from below a grate made of heat-resistant metal bars, moving the waste material on the grate by lifting it, and combusting it. It is the mainstream type for municipal solid waste incinerators.
