The NPO Cheiron Initiative, under the vision of "connecting the aspirations of researchers and their families to the future of the world," develops various activities aimed at supporting the creation of an environment where researchers can focus on their research with peace of mind and confidently choose the path of studying abroad. *1 As part of this effort, we have launched Cheiron-GIFTS 2026, the 7th call for applications for the grant program "Cheiron-GIFTS (Global Initiative for Family Travel Support)," aimed at the families and partners of researchers. *2
In addition to the theme since our inception, "the issue of overseas career paths for researchers' families and partners," Cheiron-GIFTS 2026 sets a new challenge this year addressing "unmet needs at the study destination for researchers and their families/partners that cannot be solved by existing systems."
Furthermore, the concept of "family" is diversifying with the times. For example, new family forms that do not fit conventional concepts are emerging, such as LGBTQ+ couples, common-law marriages, and single mothers/fathers. On the other hand, Japan's social infrastructure is built based on traditional forms and lags significantly behind other countries. Insights from our grant activities over the past six years have revealed the existence of challenges that existing systems cannot fully support. Therefore, from the perspective of aiming for a society that encompasses diverse forms of "family," Cheiron-GIFTS established new themes starting last year to address unmet needs at study destinations concerning researchers and their families/partners.
In the 6th round held in 2025, we received 83 applications—comparable to the record high of 89 applications the previous year—addressing the themes of "family career paths" and "diverse family/partner dynamics at researchers' study destinations." A total of 9 applications were adopted, including 4 special awards. The proposals of the adopted candidates are as follows:
◆ Challenge 1: Support the construction of an online platform, holding workshops, and conducting web surveys for children requiring special support, including specialized developmental care by speech therapists, physical therapists, occupational therapists, and clinical psychologists, when accompanying a spouse's postdoctoral study abroad, thereby contributing to securing high-quality education and developmental care opportunities. ◆ Challenge 2: Support an applicant accompanying a pediatric urology researcher's study abroad to utilize Cheiron-GIFTS to balance child-rearing with career continuation by acquiring a PhD. (https://www.cheiron.jp/post/cheiron-gifts-2025-2)
◆ Challenge 3: Support a spouse accompanying a researcher in the field of pediatric liver disease studying abroad to aim for the USCPA (US Certified Public Accountant) qualification, utilizing the grant along with their experience as a former bank employee and in real estate operations to continue their career. ◆ Challenge 4: Support a spouse accompanying a researcher working on the development of intestinal regenerative medicine using intestinal organoids and clarifying the pathology of intractable gastrointestinal diseases to acquire the SHRM-CP qualification using this grant.
