Medii Inc. (Headquarters: Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo, CEO & Physician: Yuki Yamada, hereinafter Medii) has opened a case consultation window for pediatric muscular dystrophy on its specialist consultation service for doctors, 'Medii E-Consult,' in collaboration with a team of pediatric neurologists.

This window aims to achieve early diagnosis and treatment optimization in pediatric muscular dystrophy, which requires high expertise for diagnosis and determining treatment policies. It establishes an environment where primary care physicians nationwide can directly consult with expert specialists.

Background

Muscular dystrophy is a designated intractable disease where muscle fibers degenerate and necrose due to genetic mutations, leading to progressive muscle weakness. There are multiple disease types, each being a rare disease with a small number of patients, and the onset timing and progression speed vary widely.

Particularly in childhood, initial symptoms such as delayed motor development or a tendency to fall can be difficult to distinguish from individual differences during the growth process. Therefore, depending on the disease type, delays in diagnosis—sometimes taking several years to reach a definitive diagnosis—have become a significant issue. Additionally, because physical and functional growth is remarkable during childhood, extremely high expertise is required to select optimal treatments and conduct long-term follow-ups according to age and developmental stages. Furthermore, providing explanations to patients and their families, such as future outlooks, requires the latest knowledge and multifaceted consideration.

In recent years, new treatment options based on genes and molecular mechanisms have emerged for certain disease types. These treatments often have specified indication conditions regarding age, disease stage, and genotype, making early diagnosis and appropriate judgment crucial.

On the other hand, the number of pediatric neurologists familiar with muscular dystrophy is limited nationwide, and it has been pointed out that access to specialists varies by region and facility. There is a need to establish a system where primary care physicians can swiftly access expert knowledge at the stage when clinical suspicion initially arises.

To address these challenges, we have opened this consultation window.

Overview of the Case Consultation Window

This window is a consultation service for doctors that primary care physicians treating pediatric muscular dystrophy can use anonymously and free of charge. Specialists provide advice based on their experience and knowledge in response to clinical questions held by primary care physicians.

Support is provided from an expert perspective at every stage of medical care, including differential diagnosis, consideration of treatment policies, interpretation of test results, age-appropriate follow-up, and methods of explaining to patients and families.

While currently targeting the pediatric phase, we plan to expand correspondence to adult clinical departments in the future.
