*Survey conducted by our company based on KSP-POS nationwide data from May 2025 to April 2026 in the simmered bean category.

Maruyanagi, which manufactures and sells simmered soybeans, next ventured into developing "delicious boiled soybeans." This was around 2002, a time when health consciousness led to a demand for simmered beans with lighter flavors and less sweetness. However, all the trial products lacked the original deliciousness of soybeans, far from being "delicious boiled soybeans," and development was extremely difficult. Then one day, by heating the soybeans without boiling, they achieved the ideal soybean, sweet like a chestnut and fluffy. This was the moment steamed soybeans were born. Further research revealed that steamed soybeans not only tasted good but also had minimal loss of nutrients, leading to their industry-first commercialization in January 2004. Kirari Mochi is a variety of mochi barley characterized by its chewy, popping texture and higher fiber content compared to conventional non-glutinous barley. Furthermore, it does not brown after cooking, significantly improving its appearance compared to conventional varieties, and it has less of a characteristic barley smell, resulting in superior taste.

Kirari Mochi cultivated in Kato City and the Hokuharima region was added to the "Hyogo Prefecture Certified Agricultural, Forestry, and Fishery Products Brand Strategy Items" by Hyogo Prefecture in August 2023 as "Hokuharima Mochi Barley Kirari Mochi," and efforts are underway to improve the quality and expand brand recognition of mochi barley.
