Marubun Corporation (Marubun), an electronics trading company (President & CEO: Hiroshi Horikoshi, Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo), is pleased to announce that it has begun handling the Supercontinuum (SC) light sources, "Horizon" and "Iceblink" series, from FYLA Laser S.L. (FYLA Laser) of Spain.
FYLA Laser's SC Light Sources
[Background and Objectives]
Currently, there are three main types of white light sources used in a wide range of markets: "lamp light sources," "LED light sources," and "SC light sources." However, conventional lamp light sources, some of which use mercury or ozone, have significant challenges in terms of environmental impact and maintenance costs due to their short lifespan requiring frequent replacement.
As an alternative, SC light sources, capable of outputting broadband laser light, have been utilized in cutting-edge fields requiring high-precision optical measurement, such as life sciences (bio-imaging, including FLIM: Fluorescence Lifetime Imaging) and semiconductor/wafer inspection. On the other hand, conventional general SC light sources have had technical issues such as uneven responses (variations) in the object being measured due to spectral unevenness, or insufficient output at specific wavelengths. Furthermore, the maintenance burden caused by optical axis misalignment has been a long-standing issue in the field.
To address these challenges, Marubun has begun handling SC light sources from FYLA Laser, which has an extensive track record of installations in major universities and research institutions in over 30 countries worldwide.
[Key Features of FYLA Laser's SC Light Sources]
Achieving a Flat Spectrum Through In-House Design and Development
FYLA Laser possesses extremely high technical capabilities, enabling them to design and develop the photonic crystal fibers (PCF) that determine the performance of SC light sources in-house. By adopting the company's original PCF design, they have suppressed the severe fluctuations in the spectrum that were a conventional issue, achieving an extremely uniform and stable "flat spectrum" across the entire band. This eliminates measurement variations by wavelength.
Achieving Ultra-Long Lifespan Through All-Fiber Structure That Prevents Optical Axis Misalignment
An all-fiber structure is employed, where all internal optical systems are connected by fibers. By eliminating optical components such as mirrors that transmit light through space, the risk of optical axis misalignment due to vibration or temperature changes is significantly reduced. This results in maintenance-free operation and an astonishing continuous operation time of over 10,000 hours (long lifespan and high durability).

[Future Outlook]
By offering FYLA Laser's products, which overcome the technical weaknesses of conventional SC light sources (spectral variations and short lifespan due to optical axis misalignment), Marubun aims to promote the replacement of high-precision SC light sources with environmentally friendly options and contribute to the expanded adoption of SC light sources in Japan.
Furthermore, as Marubun also handles white LEDs, we will propose optimal solutions tailored to customers' diverse budgets, precision requirements, and applications, in conjunction with FYLA Laser products.
