【About the Mandom International Research Grant for Alternatives to Animal Testing】
The "Mandom International Research Grant for Alternatives to Animal Testing" has been implemented since fiscal year 2007 with the aim of promoting research on alternative animal testing methods, broadly encouraging research in this field, and revitalizing the alternative methods sector.
For the 19th round, research themes related to alternative animal testing methods were solicited from around the world, primarily from Asia, under the following conditions:
- 19th Application Guidelines
- Theme: Research on alternative animal testing methods (research field is not limited)
- Grant Amount: 500,000 to 2,000,000 yen per project, total 3,000,000 yen/year
- Schedule:
- November 7, 2025: Application start
- January 30, 2026: Application deadline
- February 1, 2026: Selection start
- Early April 2026: Grant themes decided
- Until March 31, 2027: Grant period (1 year)
【Our Approach to Developing Alternative Animal Testing Methods】
Triggered by the ban on animal testing for cosmetics in Europe (EU) in March 2013, the development of alternative animal testing methods has accelerated globally, and these are now being utilized as new safety evaluation methods to replace animal testing.
In Japan, from the perspective of animal welfare, discussions and development of more accurate prediction and evaluation methods are progressing in line with the 3Rs principles (Replacement: replacing animal testing, Reduction: reducing the number of animals used, Refinement: reducing pain to animals during experiments).
Mandom, under its policy of not conducting animal testing, ensures the safety of cosmetics by utilizing human-based tests (patch tests, stinging tests, etc.) and alternative animal testing methods. We believe that further development of alternative animal testing methods aimed at improving accuracy is necessary to ensure even greater safety, and thus we are engaged in the development of alternative animal testing methods and provide grants through public calls for research in this field.
Furthermore, this initiative will be promoted not only for ensuring the safety of cosmetics but also as part of "continuous strengthening of corporate foundation," one of the materialities of our sustainability strategy. We will continue to broadly and deeply fulfill our mission of being helpful and strive to be a company whose value is recognized by all stakeholders.
