National University Corporation Osaka University and Mandom Co., Ltd. established the "Mandom Advanced Cosmetic Science Collaborative Research Institute" on April 1, 2026, and held an opening ceremony on April 12, 2026. The previous "Advanced Cosmetic Science (Mandom) Joint Research Course" at the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences accumulated knowledge over approximately 10 years, including elucidating the structure and function of human sweat glands, the function of skin immune responses, and establishing search and evaluation systems for new cosmetic ingredients. Building on this knowledge, the new collaborative institute will strengthen cooperation between both parties, promoting joint research with the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and the newly added Graduate School of Medicine. By further integrating Osaka University's advanced medical technology and Mandom's cosmetic technology, research will be deepened to create next-generation cosmetics, focusing on elucidating immune responses and temperature sensing mechanisms, and developing active ingredient screening and safety evaluation methods. The institute aims to realize innovation by widely deploying newly created value to society, utilizing broader resources, fostering young researchers, and promoting interaction among diverse talent. The research content includes: 1. Elucidation of molecular mechanisms of immune responses in the skin. 2. Elucidation of functions and control mechanisms of secretory glands in the skin, such as sweat glands and sebaceous glands. 3. Development of screening methods for active ingredients for next-generation cosmetics. 4. Development of safety evaluation methods. 5. Elucidation of mechanisms by which the skin senses temperature. The institute is located on the 3rd floor of the Osaka University MA-T Co-creation Center (Kyo no Mori).
