◆ Overview
National University Corporation Osaka University (Headquarters: Suita City, Osaka Prefecture, President: Atsushi Kumanogo, hereinafter 'Osaka University') and Mandom Corporation (Headquarters: Osaka City, President Executive Officer: Ken Nishimura, hereinafter 'Mandom') established the 'Mandom Advanced Cosmetic Science Collaborative Research Institute (*1)' on April 1, 2026, and held an opening ceremony on April 12.
For about 10 years, the 'Advanced Cosmetic Science (Mandom) Joint Research Chair (*2)' established at the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences has accumulated knowledge such as elucidating the structure and function of human sweat glands, clarifying functions in skin immune responses, and exploring new cosmetic ingredients and constructing evaluation systems.
Based on the knowledge of the Joint Research Chair, this collaborative research institute, which transitions developmentally, will strengthen the collaboration between the two parties and promote new joint research with the Graduate School of Medicine in addition to the Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences at Osaka University. By further fusing the advanced medical technology possessed by Osaka University with the cosmetic technology possessed by Mandom, we will further deepen research leading to the creation of next-generation cosmetics, such as elucidating immune responses and temperature sensing mechanisms, and developing active ingredient screening methods and safety evaluation methods.
And based on these research contents, by utilizing a wider range of resources and promoting the development of young researchers and the exchange of human resources with diverse backgrounds, we aim to further accelerate the deepening of research and the application of its results to business, and to realize innovation by widely deploying the newly created value to society.

◆ Background and Purpose of Establishing the Collaborative Research Institute
Osaka University Graduate School of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Mandom established a joint research chair in June 2015, and have been conducting activities to apply advanced medical technologies such as regenerative medicine to cosmetics research, and to socially implement research results that are valuable to consumers.
Through the efforts (*4) of the joint research chair over the past 10 years, we have accumulated numerous scientific findings leading to the development of next-generation cosmetics, such as elucidating the structure and function of human sweat glands, clarifying functions in skin immune responses, and exploring new cosmetic ingredients and constructing evaluation systems.
Moving forward, based on these research contents, we developmentally transitioned to a collaborative research institute on April 1, 2026, with the aim of further deepening research and accelerating the application of its results to business, leading to new value creation by utilizing a wider range of resources and promoting the development of young researchers and the exchange of human resources with diverse backgrounds.
We aim to realize innovation by widely deploying the created value to society.

◆ Research Contents at the Collaborative Research Institute
By further fusing Osaka University's advanced medical technology with Mandom's cosmetic technology, we will add the knowledge of the Graduate School of Medicine to the research content cultivated over about 10 years in the joint research chair. This will further deepen research on the following themes.
1. Elucidation of the molecular mechanism of immune response in the skin
2. Elucidation of the function and control mechanisms of secretory glands in the skin such as sweat glands and sebaceous glands
3. Development of screening methods for active ingredients for next-generation cosmetics
4. Development of safety evaluation methods
5. Elucidation of the mechanism by which the skin feels temperature
