LTS, Inc. (Headquarters: Minato-ku, Tokyo; President and CEO: Hiroaki Kabashima; hereinafter "LTS") announces that the following project, proposed jointly with Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (lead institution), has been selected in the "Space Strategy Fund (Second Term)" public call by the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA).
■ Project Overview
Project Name: Development and Global Deployment of a Next-Generation Infrastructure Monitoring System through Tight Integration of Satellite and Ground Sensors
Implementing Institutions: Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (lead institution), LTS, Inc. (collaborating institution)
Implementation Period: From the contract signing date to the end of March 2029 (planned)
■ Project Background and Objectives
In recent years, natural disasters such as landslides and sinkholes have become more severe globally due to the effects of climate change. Additionally, the aging of infrastructure accompanying urbanization and underground development has become a serious social issue.
It is known that many of these disasters show precursor signs as millimeter-scale ground surface deformations. However, conventional satellite observation data alone has limitations in observation frequency and accuracy, and integration with ground sensor data and existing inspection records has not been sufficiently advanced.
This project aims to realize a next-generation monitoring system that can detect infrastructure abnormalities at an early stage by developing an AI algorithm that highly integrates satellite data, ground IoT sensors, and existing inspection/survey data held by operators. This will promote a shift from reactive to preventive maintenance and aims for global market expansion, including in Turkey and Southeast Asia.
■ Roles of Each Company
- Oki Electric Industry Co., Ltd. (lead institution): Leveraging its ground IoT sensor technology, which has a track record of operation at approximately 1,000 locations in Japan, OKI will be responsible for acquiring high-precision ground observation data and quality control. It will also oversee the entire project and promote collaboration with overseas partners.
- LTS (collaborating institution): LTS has been developing technology in the field of satellite data analysis for over 10 years, and in 2024 established a subsidiary, ME-Lab Japan, specializing in satellite and weather data analysis. In this project, LTS will be in charge of the research and development of the AI algorithm that integrates satellite data and ground IoT sensor data. Concurrently, it will promote the construction of a business model for the global deployment of this system.
■ About the Space Strategy Fund
The Space Strategy Fund is a fund project established at JAXA based on the Space Technology Strategy. It aims to strengthen the technological base and expand the market of the space industry by supporting technology development, technological demonstration, and commercialization in the space field by private companies, universities, etc.
