Profile of Takayuki Nagami
During middle and high school, he served as a brass band conductor. Through an introduction from his teacher, he met Kazuo Yamada and began his conducting activities. In the past two years, at the Aichi Prefectural Art Theater, he has received acclaim for conducting works such as Tchaikovsky's "Symphony No. 4," "The Nutcracker Suite," "Slavonic March," Borodin's "Polovtsian Dances," Mozart's "Coronation Mass," the motet "Exsultate, jubilate," the overture to Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro," and "The Heavens Declare the Glory of God" from Haydn's oratorio "The Creation." He spent most of his 20s and 30s in Europe and America, active as an internationally accomplished artist. He has performed with numerous orchestras, focusing on classical, contemporary music, and jazz. He has starred in many operas and operettas, including Baroque operas by Handel, German-Austrian operas such as Mozart's "The Magic Flute" (Tamino), "Così fan tutte" (Ferrando), "The Abduction from the Seraglio" (Delmonte), and Weber's "Der Freischütz" (Max), as well as Bizet's "Carmen" (José), Verdi's "La Traviata" (Alfredo), and Puccini's "La Bohème" (Rodolfo). In musicals, he has played leading roles in "Man of La Mancha" (Don Quixote) and "Kiss Me, Kate" (Fred), and has also taken on unique roles such as the MC in "Cabaret" and Warbucks in "Annie." He has performed as a tenor soloist and countertenor soloist in Bach's "St. Matthew Passion" (Evangelist), Haydn's "The Creation" (Uriel), Haydn's "The Seasons" (Lukas), Beethoven's "Christ on the Mount of Olives" (Jesus), Mendelssohn's "Elijah" (Obadiah and Ahab), Berlioz's "The Childhood of Christ" (Narrator), Handel's oratorios including "Messiah," Bach's "Mass in B minor" and cantatas, Mozart's "Requiem," "Great Mass in C minor," "Coronation Mass," Beethoven's "Symphony No. 9," "Missa Solemnis," Mendelssohn's "Symphony No. 2, Hymn of Praise," Bruckner's "Te Deum," and Shostakovich's "From Jewish Folk Poetry" (orchestral version), among others. He has performed in many theaters, including the Turin Royal Opera House and Carnegie Hall, and is also renowned as a conductor and educator. He has frequently collaborated with international artists, including the BHS a cappella world champions Crossroads. In Japan, he has appeared in performances sponsored by the Agency for Cultural Affairs Arts Festival and NHK Classic Studio. At Merry Artists Company, he has served as Artistic Director for all performances and has taken leading roles in many productions, such as George Gershwin in "Rhapsody de Papa" and Frank Sinatra in "The Voice." He is the lead vocalist for the Merry Artists Jazz Orchestra MAJO. He has released CDs such as "My Blue Heaven" and "Joyful Christmas," and is currently working on new recordings. He has been described by literary critic Shin Shimizu as "possessing both the passionate action of a genius artist and the logical, philosophical thinking of an intellectual." Art critic Shunkichi Baba states, "Takayuki Nagami is multifaceted, with a strong desire for freedom at his core." His books include "Silver Radiance" (NG Publishing).
