A monk from the East Valley (Waki), having received an invitation to view cherry blossoms from an ability (Ai) of the West Valley, sets out to see the cherry blossoms in the West Valley accompanied by many young boys (flower-viewing chigo). An unfamiliar yamabushi (mountain ascetic, Maeshite) arrives there and sits down heavily. The group, whose mood is spoiled, leaves, but one young boy remains alone. This was none other than the future Minamoto no Yoshitsune, Shanao (Ushiwakamaru, Kokata). Shanao calls out to the yamabushi and invites him to view the blossoms together. He then laments his loneliness, being surrounded by the children of the Taira clan. The yamabushi, sympathizing with his situation and drawn to him, guides him around the famous flower spots. When Shanao asks his name, the yamabushi reveals that he is the Great Tengu living in this mountain, promises to teach him military strategy to destroy the Taira clan, and flies away after promising to meet again tomorrow. [Nakairi (Intermission)] The next day, before Shanao, who is holding a naginata (halberd), the Great Tengu (Nochishite) appears, leading renowned tengus from all over the country. Drawing on the historical tale of Zhang Liang, a retainer of Emperor Gaozu of Han, the Great Tengu preaches the mindset of one who seeks teachings from a master, and then imparts the secrets of military strategy. Finally, vowing to become Shanao's shadow, never leaving his side, and protecting his long-lasting fortunes in war, he reluctantly disappears into Mount Kurama.
