The walking immersive theater 'Memory Pawnshop Honoakari-do,' an experiential play set in the streets of Kagurazaka, opened on April 22nd (Wednesday). It will be performed daily until May 3rd (Sunday/Holiday).
What is the walking immersive theater 'Memory Pawnshop Honoakari-do'?
Participants hold a lantern and walk through the streets of Kagurazaka while listening to audio streaming from the audio AR app "Locatone™." *Japanese-patterned haori jackets are available for those who wish (free rental/limited quantity).
Along the way, participants encounter characters embodying figures associated with Kagurazaka—such as Kagurazaka Hanko, Kyoka Izumi, and Koyo Ozaki—portrayed by actors, and the story progresses through their conversations.
During the pre-performances held for four days in February, participants shared feedback such as, "I came to love the town of Kagurazaka" and "I was moved by the feeling that the town's scenery, sounds, and even the wind became part of the production."
This time, the experience has been updated to allow for deeper immersion, with improvements ranging from the addition of an opening scene to draw participants into the story, partial changes to the route, and adjustments to walking speed for enhanced comfort.
Furthermore, actors Mitsuki Umetsu and Yuuka Terasaki (actor/voice actor) have been cast as the guiding participants. They each play three roles per route.
Performance Report
An immersive experience to relive someone's memories of living in this town while walking through Kagurazaka.
The story begins with the participant visiting "Honoakari-do," a peculiar pawnshop that deals with human memories. The alluring shopkeeper, amidst countless lanterns, says they handle "memories of that day you wish to redo."
Enticed by the shopkeeper, you write down the day you wish to redo on a wooden tag. However, you cannot redo it yourself; by redoing someone else's memory on their behalf, your memory will also be redone by someone else, they say.
You pick up someone else's memory—a lantern—placed in the shop and head out into the town. Guided by the "Lantern Keepers" in black haori, after a short walk, you encounter figures from the Showa and Meiji eras—characters portrayed by actors—in the modern streets of Kagurazaka.
What you hear through the open-ear earphones worn by all participants are the voices of the characters' friends and companions. These voices recount scenes from that day in the past, and the regrets of memories they wish to redo.
Even though you are walking in Kagurazaka of the Reiwa era, the audio recounting those times makes you feel as if you alone have time-slipped.
Interacting with the characters in front of you, walking alongside them, confronting their worries, how will you get involved and make choices as the person in this memory? And do you truly wish to redo the memory you wrote on the wooden tag yourself?
Even those visiting Kagurazaka for the first time will naturally develop affection and attachment to the town by experiencing the story while walking. Those already familiar with Kagurazaka will also encounter a different landscape than usual.
We invite you to experience this unique and heartwarming experience, where the charm of the town and the power of the story intertwine, in Kagurazaka as early summer approaches.
