'Breach of Promise' by Damon Runyon
American author Damon Runyon was also known as a shrewd newspaper reporter, but from the 1930s onwards, he wrote some seventy short stories set on Broadway in New York. The masterpiece musical and film 'Guys and Dolls', well-known in Japan as well, is based on his short stories. 'Breach of Promise', presented today, is one of those pieces.
Harry is a private detective who won't shy away from dirty jobs for money. Contrary to such a reputation, he was a man who strictly kept his promises to clients and the secrets he learned. The person who requested such a Harry was a millionaire named Tuesday. Annoyed by his selfish request to secretly retrieve a love letter given to a former lover, Harry nonetheless heads to the woman's house...
'The Government Inspector' by Nikolai Gogol
Nikolai Gogol was born in Ukraine in 1809. His father was an amateur playwright, and Gogol himself was reportedly absorbed in theater during his student days. Later, he began writing novels while working in St. Petersburg, the capital of Imperial Russia. As he gradually distinguished himself as a writer, the play 'The Government Inspector' was written at the same time. As soon as it was performed, it received overwhelming support from the common people, but its satirical nature also made it a target of criticism from various quarters. Gogol, terrified by the uproar, left Russia and spent the rest of his life in Germany and Italy. He died young at the age of 43 in 1852. His style is said to have greatly influenced subsequent writers such as Dostoevsky.
While a young traveler was staying at a hotel in a certain country town, a rumor arrived that an inspector from the capital city of St. Petersburg was coming incognito to investigate corruption. The townspeople assumed the young man was the inspector and ran around frantically trying to cover up their wrongdoings. Among them, the mayor's wife attempts to approach him closely to probe the inspector's demeanor on behalf of her husband. However, the young man, who was not the inspector, realizes the townspeople's misunderstanding and begins to think of exploiting it...
'A Happy Ending' by Anton Chekhov
Chekhov is an author who was active in Russia during Japan's Meiji era. He is a writer about two generations younger than Gogol. In Japan, plays such as 'The Seagull' and 'The Cherry Orchard' are famous, but he began writing short stories when he was a medical student, leaving behind over 500 stories in his lifetime. 'A Happy Ending', performed today, is one of those pieces published in 1887.
A 52-year-old train conductor who has missed the opportunity to marry is introduced to a matchmaker in order to take a good wife. A female matchmaker appears for the meeting, but the conductor begins to list his preferences and demands to her endlessly. The woman is troubled by the difficulty of his demands, but the conductor notices something about her...
