Yuki Nomura, the eldest son of Kyogen master Mansai Nomura, who studies under his grandfather, National Living Treasure Mansaku Nomura, and his father, will hold the inaugural performance of his self-hosted Kyogen gathering, "Kyogen Idea Gathering," on Sunday, May 10, at the National Noh Theatre.
"Idea" is a philosophical term, a word from the ancient Greek philosopher Plato, representing reality that can only be recognized by reason, or in other words, that which is seen with the "mind's eye." With the philosophy of delivering Kyogen expression to everyone through imagination, concepts, and creativity via the concept of Idea, Yuki himself named the event.
The 0th performance, held last May as "Idea Kyogen," was also an immediate sell-out and received highly favorable reviews. This time, the event has been renamed to a more easily understandable title as a Kyogen gathering, and with full confidence, it marks its first performance at the National Noh Theatre.
This time, Yuki will premiere the original major piece of his school, "Kinnaka (Kannaoka)". He directly tackles the stylistic beauty of Kyogen's dance and song, which he has been rigorously instructed on by Mansaku and Mansai. "Funawatashi Muko (Funawatashi Muko)" by Mansaku, Mansai, and Yukio Ishida is a highlight showcasing the seasoned skills and combination of the three performers. Additionally, Saburota Kanze, a Noh actor of the Kanze school and of the same generation as Yuki, will grace the stage with the Mai-Bayashi "Yoro: Mizunami no Den," and Yuki's uncle, Shoji Nomura, will perform the Shimai "Kikujido." To conclude, Yuki will perform the fantastically imaginative Kyogen "Kusabira (Kusabira)" with his troupe, bringing the event to a lively close.
