Rino Clinic Higashi-Ginza (Chuo-ku, Tokyo) announces that its director, Kunio Miyazaki, gave a special lecture as an adjunct instructor at Kagoshima University Faculty of Dentistry on June 23, 2026.
This lecture, which he also led last year, was aimed at dental students and covered the practical aspects of bimaxillary surgery for treating dentofacial deformities in private practice, as well as clinic management utilizing generative AI.
In recent years, there has been an increase in patients seeking surgical orthodontic treatment for dentofacial deformities, not only for functional improvement but also for enhancing facial balance and aesthetics. Furthermore, digitalization and AI utilization are rapidly advancing in the medical field, requiring healthcare professionals to acquire new knowledge and perspectives.
This lecture introduced the concepts and cases of bimaxillary surgery performed in actual clinical settings, along with explanations on medical DX and clinic operations using generative AI.

Lecture on the Practicalities of Bimaxillary Surgery in Private Practice
The first half of the lecture focused on surgical orthodontic treatment for dentofacial deformities in private practice.
Treatment for dentofacial deformities requires not only correcting the bite but also comprehensively considering facial balance and function. Particularly in private practice, where each patient has different desired ideals and aesthetic goals, treatment planning is extremely important.
Presenting actual cases, the lecture covered:
- Preoperative diagnosis and treatment planning
- Simulation using CT images
- Planning considering facial balance
- Skeletal analysis and occlusal diagnosis
- Practicalities of perioperative management
- Postoperative progress and patient satisfaction assessment
It was also highlighted that the success of bimaxillary surgery depends not only on the surgical procedure itself but also significantly on orthodontic planning prior to surgery.
Preoperative orthodontics involves aligning teeth and preparing the environment for ideal skeletal movement through surgery. Postoperatively, fine adjustments to the occlusion are made to ensure long-term stability.
Therefore, bimaxillary surgery is not a treatment that can be completed by an oral surgeon alone; it requires close collaboration with an orthodontist to achieve favorable treatment outcomes.
The lecture emphasized the importance of integrating occlusal and skeletal planning, as well as orthodontic management to prevent relapse, conveying the significance of team-based medical care to the students.
Furthermore, since the private practice domain demands aesthetic evaluation in addition to functional improvement, actual cases were used to illustrate the importance of thorough communication with patients and goal setting.
AI is used to improve efficiency and operations in a wide range of areas, including marketing and administrative tasks.
Lecture on Clinic Management Utilizing AI
The latter half of the lecture explained the application of generative AI in the medical industry.
In recent years, staff shortages and increased workload have become major challenges for medical institutions. Meanwhile, patient expectations for the quality of medical services are rising annually, demanding higher medical value delivery with limited personnel.
The lecture covered:
- Information dissemination using generative AI
- Application to clinic marketing
- Content creation for patients
- Streamlining internal operations
- Concepts for promoting medical DX
- Management strategies utilizing AI
Actual examples from clinic operations were presented.
It was also explained that AI is not intended to replace healthcare professionals but rather to serve as a support tool, enabling them to focus on their core responsibilities.
The students deepened their understanding of the integration of medicine and technology, recognizing the growing importance of AI utilization not only in medical advancements but also in management and information dissemination.

Director Kunio Miyazaki's Comment
I am deeply honored to have had the opportunity to lecture at Kagoshima University Faculty of Dentistry again this year. In this lecture, through the concepts and actual cases of bimaxillary surgery in private practice, I discussed the importance of comprehensive planning that looks ahead from preoperative diagnosis to postoperative management.
Bimaxillary surgery is not a treatment that can be completed by oral surgeons alone. It is crucial for orthodontists and oral surgeons to collaborate and develop optimal treatment plans for each patient, considering preoperative orthodontics, surgery, and postoperative orthodontics. I believe the students were able to grasp the importance of team-based medical care, not just surgical techniques.
In the latter half, I spoke about the utilization of AI in the medical industry.
Currently, staff shortages and increased workload are significant challenges in the medical industry. However, the essence of medicine lies in facing patients, listening to their concerns and anxieties, building trust, and providing optimal medical care.
I believe it is important to clearly distinguish between tasks that only healthcare professionals can perform and tasks that can be delegated to AI.
Dialogue with patients, examinations, treatment plan decisions, surgery, and communication to ensure patients feel at ease are tasks that only humans can do.
On the other hand, areas where AI excels include data aggregation and analysis, minute-taking, marketing analysis, information organization, and document creation.
Our clinic utilizes AI for DX through our appointment system and web-based consultations, as well as for supporting medical record creation using voice input, analyzing patient trends, aggregating marketing data, and assisting with content creation.
The purpose of introducing AI is not to reduce staff numbers. It is to reduce the time healthcare professionals spend on administrative tasks, allowing them to dedicate that time to patient communication and improving the quality of medical care.
Time spent interacting with patients is the most valuable time for a medical institution. Therefore, we are actively delegating tasks that AI can handle to AI, creating an environment where staff can concentrate on work that only humans can do.
I believe that future medical institutions will need to establish systems that can provide high-quality medical care with fewer personnel by utilizing DX and AI, rather than simply increasing staff numbers.
Through this lecture, I hope that the students will become interested not only in medical technology but also in future medical management and technology utilization, and that they will play an active role as the future leaders of medicine.
