Kyoto Wartime Newspaper Publication Commemoration Symposium: Shinji Ishii and others to 'Read Wartime Newspapers in Kyoto Now' on June 21

During the Pacific War, how did the Kyoto Shimbun report the news under wartime conditions?

The 'Kyoto Wartime Newspaper,' which garnered significant attention since its serialization and received the '33rd Sakata Memorial Journalism Award Special Prize,' has now been released in bookstores as a preserved edition. To commemorate its publication, a symposium will be held.

Shin Nishiyama, professor at Kyoto University and supervisor of this project, author Shinji Ishii, who resides in Kyoto, and Kyoto Shimbun reporters who were in charge of the serialization, will exchange opinions from various perspectives, including articles they focused on, the atmosphere of the time emerging from the pages, and the candid voices of people revealed through interviews.

In an era now referred to as a 'new pre-war,' what can we learn from history? How should we select information? What is the role required of journalism?

We will consider these questions together with our readers, with 'Kyoto Wartime Newspaper' in hand, a publication made possible precisely because Kyoto's newspaper pages were not burned in air raids.

Shin Nishiyama

Professor at Kyoto University Archives. Born in Hyogo Prefecture in 1963. Specializes in modern Japanese history. Began research on student mobilization for war after interviewing survivors for the 'Centennial History of Kyoto University.' Served as supervisor for 'Kyoto Wartime Newspaper.'

Author. Born in Osaka City in 1966. Graduated from Kyoto University Faculty of Letters. His works include 'A Certain Day' (Osamu Dazai Prize), 'Evil Voice' (Kawai Hayao Story Prize), 'Cello Lake' (Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology Award for Art). One of his representative works, 'Toritsukare Otoko,' will be adapted into an animated film in 2025. Resides in Kyoto City.
