DAZZLE
Dance Company DAZZLE
Formed in 1996, DAZZLE is a dance company that continues to create original works under the slogan "Brilliance that belongs to all categories, yet none." They pursue a unique style that fuses street dance and contemporary dance, creating highly narrative works that actively incorporate elements of Japanese culture such as movies, comics, and games. They aim to deliver dance to a wider audience beyond just dance enthusiasts, constantly expanding its possibilities through cutting-edge methods and striving for "open dance." They won "Legend Tokyo (2011)," which determines Japan's best dance entertainment, and their representative work "Hana to Otori" received the Grand Prix at the "Green Festa" theatre festival and the Excellence Award at the Young Director Competition, earning high acclaim not only in the dance world but also in the theatre scene. They have actively performed overseas, including at "SAMJOKO Asian Theatre Festival (2010, South Korea)," "Sibiu International Theatre Festival (2011, Romania)," one of the world's top three theatre festivals, and "Fadjr International Theatre Festival (2012, Iran)," the largest theatre festival in the Middle East. Their performances received standing ovations, and at the "Fadjr International Theatre Festival," they won two awards: the Special Jury Prize and the Stage Design Award. In 2015, they starred in a stage production directed by Living National Treasure Kabuki actor Tamasaburo Bando. In 2025, they restaged "Breakthrough Journey" (2021 Osaka, 2022 Tokyo), featuring over 100 dancers from 11 regions with diverse backgrounds including nationality, language, and disability, at the Osaka-Kansai Expo.
Since 2017, they have primarily focused on producing immersive theater (experiential performances) popular in London and New York, establishing themselves as pioneers in Japan with numerous works. These include "Touch the Dark" (2017) set in an abandoned hospital, "SHELTER" (2019) with a multi-ending format, a collaboration with ONE PIECE TOWER "When the Box of Time Opens" (2018), the Shochiku-produced "Sakurahime" (2020) at Minamiza Theatre in Kyoto, and the "Hyakumonogatari" series, which started online and became a "Traveling Immersive Theater." In June 2021, they opened "Venus of TOKYO," Japan's first permanent immersive theater (closed on March 27, 2022, due to the closure of Odaiba VenusFort). Despite challenging times, they performed daily for 10 months (877 performances) without a single day off, attracting attention from various industries.
Subsequently, they have continued to produce works such as the permanent immersive theater "Lost in the pages" (Ueno, closed June 2024) themed around literature (April 2023-), the immersive theater "Unseen you" (Shirokanedai, closing May 2025) (September 2023-), and the immersive experience "Anemoia Tokyo" near Tokyo Station (closed March 15, 2026) (October 2024-). And soon, starting March 20, 2026, they will present the immersive theater "Hanayoi no Daichakai" at Kitano Tenmangu Shrine, the head shrine of all Tenmangu shrines nationwide, in collaboration with a creative team EiM, which includes artist Mika Ninagawa and Hiroyasu Miyata, a producer for the Osaka-Kansai Expo theme project, along with specialists from various fields (until May 24, 2026).
