Hideki Togi Profile
Born in Tokyo in 1959. The Togi family has inherited Gagaku for 1300 years from the Nara period to the present day as a family of court musicians (gakke).
While serving in the Music Department of the Imperial Household Agency, he primarily played hichiriki, biwa, taiko drums, sang, danced, and played cello. He participated in court ceremonies, Gagaku concerts held at the Imperial Palace, and overseas performances, playing a role in introducing Japanese traditional culture and promoting international goodwill. At the same time, he passionately created original compositions combining piano and synthesizers with Gagaku instruments.
After debuting with the album "Hideki Togi" in 1996, he has received numerous awards, including the Japan Record Award Planning Prize and the Japan Gold Disc Award for Traditional Japanese Music Album of the Year.
He has held concerts both domestically and internationally, pioneering new possibilities for Gagaku with his unique expression that utilizes the characteristics of Gagaku instruments, transcending genres such as classical, rock, jazz, and orchestral music. He received the 2024 Agency for Cultural Affairs Commissioner's Special Award for his contribution to Japanese art and culture.
