Kumon Publishing Co., Ltd. (President and CEO: Norinori Izumi) has published a craft workbook titled 'Let's Make Pop-Up Cards Together!' by Shimako Okamura, a renowned picture book author and graphic designer, on June 30, 2026.
This craft book enables users to create 28 different pop-up cards that jump or move when opened, simply by following step-by-step instructions to cut and assemble. Once completed, users can add personal messages and gift them to loved ones, making it a joyful experience of both crafting and giving.
No special materials are required—the pages themselves serve as the craft sheets. Each printed page can be cut out and used directly, so all you need are household items: scissors and glue. Crafting can begin immediately.
Starting with basic techniques and pop-up mechanisms, the book gradually increases in difficulty, minimizing preparation and cleanup time—ideal for quality parent-child bonding during school holidays.
Customize to create your own unique cards. Foster creativity while experiencing the joy of giving.
The book features diverse themes such as seasonal events, animals, and vehicles. Children can personalize their cards with stickers, drawings, and handwritten messages.
The process of designing moving mechanisms and assembling them by hand stimulates children's thinking and creativity. Gifting these heartfelt pop-up cards to family and friends also nurtures communication skills.
Author Shimako Okamura's message: "The Joy of Handmade Surprises in the Digital Age"
The magic of pop-up cards lies in the excitement and surprise when the paper suddenly rises upon opening. The experience of transforming a flat sheet into a three-dimensional artwork through one's own hands brings profound delight to children.
I have worked on various paper-based projects, including pop-up card designs for MoMA's museum shop and pop-up book workshops at the Itabashi Art Museum. This book is packed with my favorite paper craft ideas developed through years of creating with children.
I encourage everyone to experience the wonder of paper engineering with their own hands.
