Kamakura Municipal Onari Elementary School

[Designer's Comment]
We are highly honored to receive the 25th JIA 25-Year Award.
We would like to express our deep gratitude to the citizens of Kamakura who have affectionately and carefully used this building over the long period of more than 25 years, and to Kamakura City for continuously carrying out appropriate maintenance and management of the wooden structure.
This reconstruction, necessitated by the aging of the old school building, brought together the enthusiastic participation of citizens and the wisdom of architectural and school education experts, pursuing a new form of educational space centered on a wooden school building reconstruction.
Going forward, it will be necessary to adapt to the times, continuing to undergo renovations in response to changes in the number of students and updates to the educational system. We hope that the intention to "inherit the original landscape of Onari Elementary School" will be passed down unchanged through any era, and that it will remain a building loved by the local community.

A School Inheriting History and Open to the Community
Kamakura Municipal Onari Elementary School is a traditional school founded in 1933. The pseudo-Western style wooden school building has long been cherished as an emotional anchor for local residents, going beyond a mere nostalgic presence. An elementary school is the most familiar public facility for people and serves as a core of the community.
Discussions regarding reconstruction due to the aging of the old building began in the 1980s. Many citizens enthusiastically participated in the discussions, and in the late 1990s, the reconstruction specialized committee and we joined, pursuing a new form of educational space while centering on the preservation of the wooden school building.
In this project, we restored the exterior, which can be called the mental landscape of local residents, and reused some of the structural and finishing materials from the old school building. As a result, an atmosphere that allows alumni to recall their childhood days has been inherited.
In addition, in various parts of the school building,
