The Suita Industrial Fair is an event held to foster interaction between businesses operating in Suita City, Osaka Prefecture, and its citizens. On this occasion, we planned the exhibition content together with Hibiya Kadan, which has its Western Japan Branch in Suita City, and conducted a workshop to create flower art using fresh flowers and sustainable paper.
"Hanging Flower for you" Workshop Content and Participant Observations
At the joint booth "Green Labo." by Kousoku Offset and Hibiya Kadan, participants could experience creating their own unique flower art.
First, participants received a base card at the reception and selected paper flower and leaf parts.
There were 8 types of flower options.
During the planning stage:
- We decided to represent flowers that are not seasonal.
- We aimed to express colors not found in fresh flowers (or in nature).
We prepared a total of 20 types of flower parts in various colors and 8 types of leaf parts.
The paper for the flowers and leaves was made from Flower Paper and Banana Paper.
Flower Paper is a paper born from the event "Osaka Flower Carpet" held at Expo Commemoration Park in Suita City. It is made from tulips that were scheduled for disposal and waste paper.
Banana Paper is a fair-trade paper containing banana tree stem fibers. Its use contributes to addressing social issues.
By using sustainable paper blended with plant-derived waste materials, the creations achieved a very natural atmosphere.
In the workshop, participants could choose 5 flower parts and 2 leaf parts.
They carefully selected their parts, deliberating on their choices.
- "I like pink, so I'll choose pink flowers!"
- "I'll make it blue for my father."
- "I want to include plenty of rapeseed flowers and baby's breath because small flowers are cute."
- "I like tulips, so I'll make tulips the main flower."
There were various reasons for their choices.
Some chose intuitively based on their preferences, while others researched flower meanings for someone special.
After selecting the paper flower and leaf parts, participants then chose fresh flowers.
These included colorful seasonal flowers such as gerberas and carnations. Participants carefully considered which fresh flowers would best complement their chosen paper parts to achieve their desired look, holding them against the base card.
Hibiya Kadan's professional staff, experts in handling flowers, provided easy-to-understand explanations on flower types and handling methods for both children and adults.
Once the fresh flowers were chosen, participants attached the paper flower parts to the base card and decorated them freely with pens.
▲ A message reads "Thank you always" ▲ A message reads "Happy Birthday"
Many participants joined with the intention of gifting their creations to someone.
Finally, a ribbon was tied to the base card and fresh flowers to complete the artwork.
Participant Creations
A total of 70 people participated over the two days.
The resulting flower art was diverse and unique, with each piece showcasing different color schemes and arrangements.
The "KAMIKEN" project, which aims to create opportunities to experience sustainable paper, will continue to expand its efforts in connecting waste materials and social issues with consumers through hands-on initiatives.
