Toba National College of Maritime Technology (Toba City, Mie Prefecture; Principal: Haruo Mimura; hereinafter "Toba National College of Maritime Technology"), in collaboration with KDDI Corporation and its affiliates, conducted training for the installation of a ship-based mobile phone base station on Wednesday, April 8, Reiwa 8 (2026).
This training is being conducted based on the "Cooperation Agreement on the Installation of Ship-Based Base Stations in the Event of a Disaster" concluded between the college and KDDI Corporation in November Reiwa 6 (2024). It has been carried out annually since the completion of the training ship "Tobamaru (Fourth Generation)", and this marks the second time.
The training ship "Tobamaru (Fourth Generation)" is equipped with disaster support functions. In the event of large-scale disasters such as earthquakes or typhoons, when communication is disrupted in coastal areas such as remote islands and peninsulas, and restoration from land or air routes is difficult or time-consuming, the ship proceeds to the affected area from the sea. The purpose is to quickly restore communication areas by operating the ship-based mobile phone base station installed on board.
Radio wave transceiver being installed
In this training, the installation of antennas, switching of lines, and installation and connection of radio wave transceivers were carried out on the training ship "Tobamaru" (actual radio wave emission was not performed). This second training saw smoother operations compared to the previous one, confirming the effectiveness of the training.
The college will continue to strengthen the rapid operational system of the training ship "Tobamaru" during disasters by collaborating with KDDI Corporation and its affiliates and conducting regular training.
