Kisarazu National College of Technology (Kisarazu City, Chiba Prefecture; Principal: Ritsuo Sakemura; hereinafter "Kisarazu Kosen") held a workshop titled "Treasure Hunt by Making a Metal Detector!" at Aeon Mall Kisarazu on Saturday, March 7, 2026.
### Event: "Treasure Hunt by Making a Metal Detector!" Overview
Date: Saturday, March 7, 2026
Venue: Aeon Mall Kisarazu, 1st Floor, South Atrium
Workshop: "Treasure Hunt by Making a Metal Detector!"
10:30-11:30, 11:30-12:30, 13:30-14:30 (Held 3 times in total)
16 elementary school students (4th-6th grade) per session
Purpose: Held with the aim of providing children with an experience to learn the "properties of electricity" through electronic crafting, making them feel the "joy of learning" and "wanting to learn more in detail!"
Overview: There were explanations of what a metal detector is and how to wire it to a breadboard. After that, a hands-on workshop was held 3 times in total, where participants actually made a metal detector and enjoyed using the completed device.
### Scenes from the Day
On the day of the event, a total of 48 elementary school students from Chiba Prefecture and their siblings participated in the workshop.
In the lecture, participants first cut, bent, and stretched the distributed materials to shape them, and then wired them to the breadboard. They were asked to bring their completed metal detectors close to various metals and experience the change in sound.
All the participants seemed to have enjoyed the crafting, and their smiling faces while working and their joyful expressions when they felt the change in sound were impressive.
Along with the lecture, there were exhibitions created by Kisarazu Kosen students showing the characteristics of their departments, crafts actually made in public lectures, and Lego robots they use. This allowed people of a wide range of ages to take an interest.
Because this workshop was also held in a vaulted venue with large digital signage, it provided a good opportunity for local people to enjoy the workshop while shopping, with some people listening to the lecture from outside the venue after seeing the signage, and others who just happened to pass by participating.
The participating elementary school students seemed to have enjoyed crafting with the teachers and student assistants. In the post-lecture questionnaire, they expressed their expectations for future events, saying things like, "The staff were polite and it was very fun," "I want to use this to search for metal at the beach next time," and "It was fun to have an experience I wouldn't normally get. I'm looking forward to the next Kosen event."
Kisarazu Kosen will continue to hold events in collaboration with Aeon Mall Kisarazu.
