Survey Summary

86.0% are "concerned" about this summer's electricity bills, and about half, 52.9%, "did not know" that the government's electricity and gas price support (approximately 5,000 yen reduction in burden over 3 months) would be resumed.

Even with the support, 88.3% answered "concerned," revealing a reality where subsidies alone cannot fully alleviate household financial anxiety.

The most common target monthly electricity bill is "7,000 yen to less than 10,000 yen." Approximately 80% are also working on reviewing fixed costs, indicating that efforts are underway to review not just electricity saving but the entire household budget.

Background of the Survey

In the summer of 2026, concerns about electricity bills are directly impacting household finances.

On May 26, 2026, the government decided at a cabinet meeting to implement electricity and gas price support for usage from July to September (approximately 5,000 yen reduction in burden for a standard household over 3 months). However, with prices still rising, many people are likely concerned about this summer's electricity bills.

Furthermore, the increase in living costs, including electricity bills, is prompting a growing trend of reviewing fixed costs such as insurance premiums.

Therefore, we conducted a survey on the actual situation and awareness regarding electricity bills for the summer of 2026, targeting men and women aged 20 to 50 nationwide.

Survey Results

86.0% are Concerned About Electricity Bills This Summer

When asked if they are concerned about the impact of rising electricity bills on their household finances this summer, 86.0% answered "Yes."

This suggests that many people are worried about this summer's electricity bills.

About Half "Did Not Know" About Government Electricity and Gas Price Support

When asked if they were aware that the government's electricity and gas price support (approximately 5,000 yen reduction in burden over 3 months) would be resumed in the summer of 2026 (July-September), 52.9% answered "Did not know."

88.3% Answered "Concerned" Even With Support

When asked if they are concerned about this summer's electricity bills even with government support, 41.4% answered "Very concerned" and 46.9% answered "Somewhat concerned," totaling 88.3% who are concerned.

Approximately 90% answered "concerned" even after knowing about the support. With continued price increases, many people seem to feel that subsidies alone cannot cover this year's price hikes.

This Summer's Electricity Bill Target is "7,000 yen to less than 10,000 yen" for the Majority

When asked about their target monthly electricity bill for this summer (July-September), "7,000 yen to less than 10,000 yen" was the most common at 27.4%, followed by "10,000 yen to less than 15,000 yen" at 22.0%, and "5,000 yen to less than 7,000 yen" at 19.7%.

Even in households with children, which tend to have higher expenses, about 60% want to keep their bills between 7,000 and 15,000 yen, indicating a high level of financial awareness.

Top Electricity Saving Method is "Raising Air Conditioner Setting Temperature"

When asked about the methods they plan to use to save electricity and reduce costs this summer (multiple answers allowed), "Raising the air conditioner setting temperature" was the most common at 26.1%, followed by "Cooling off at public facilities" at 22.1%, and "Using cooling goods" at 17.9%.

This shows that many people are considering saving money by reducing air conditioner usage.

Approximately 80% Are Reviewing or Considering Reviewing Fixed Costs

When asked about "fixed costs" that they have reviewed within the past year or are considering reviewing this summer due to the consecutive increases in electricity and living costs (multiple answers allowed), "Communication costs (smartphones, internet lines)" accounted for 27.9%, and "Subscription services (video, music, etc.)" accounted for 26.4%.

On the other hand, only 17.9% answered "No plans to review," indicating that approximately 80% are planning to save money by reviewing some form of fixed costs.

Comments from the "Solid Insurance, Proper Savings." Editorial Department

This survey highlighted the reality that government support measures alone cannot fully alleviate "summer electricity bill anxiety."

While "raising the setting temperature" is the top electricity-saving method, caution is needed regarding the risk of heatstroke.

Furthermore, approximately 80% of people are working on reviewing fixed costs, and reviewing fixed costs as a whole, including insurance premiums, could be a step towards getting through this summer.

Finding a balance within a reasonable range seems to be the key to staying comfortable.
