As part of the Model United Nations program at Kobe City University of Foreign Studies (hereinafter referred to as 'the University'), 12 students and two faculty members were sent to the German Model United Nations (GerMUN) conference held in Cologne, Germany, from Thursday, February 26, to Sunday, March 1, 2026.
1. Reflections on the German Model United Nations (GerMUN)
From the very beginning of the conference, our students actively formed negotiation groups and engaged in repeated exchanges of opinions with students gathered from across Germany. Over the course of four days, they engaged in meaningful discussions aimed at building partnerships and reaching consensus, sincerely addressing the challenges facing the international community, and fostering friendships with the participating German students.
This educational program contributes to the development of global citizens capable of contributing to world peace and the realization of a sustainable society. Through this experience, our students were able to cultivate an international perspective and collaborative problem-solving skills.
2. About the Model United Nations Program
Model United Nations is an educational activity originating in the United States, where participants take on the roles of national delegations, similar to actual UN meetings. The goal is to deepen understanding of real-world international issues through discussions and debates, while enhancing comprehensive international communication skills, including negotiation, argumentation, and language proficiency.
A key feature of the University's Model United Nations program is the fusion of simulation (virtual) activities conducted in Model UN conferences with experiential learning (real) by visiting actual UN sites. Participating students visit the UN Headquarters in New York and the UN Office at Geneva as part of a study tour. By seeing and understanding the activities of international organizations firsthand, their classroom discussions and simulations become deeper and more practical.
In this way, the defining characteristic of our program is its aim to deepen understanding of international issues and cultivate the perspective and practical skills necessary to succeed in the international community through a combination of virtual and real-world learning.
