Kinsta, a provider of managed server services for WordPress, has launched a 'Bot Protection' feature to respond to the increasing volume of AI crawlers and automated traffic.

In recent years, the structure of website traffic has significantly changed due to the proliferation of AI crawlers and agent-based AI. According to Kinsta's recently published report, 'The Reality of Traffic in the Age of AI and Bots,' bots account for the majority of traffic on many websites, with AI crawler traffic increasing by over 300% in the past year alone. Furthermore, the frequency of automated traffic has risen from approximately once every 200 visits at the beginning of 2025 to once every 31 visits by year-end, presenting new challenges for website operators.

This surge in automated traffic can not only consume server resources and degrade performance but also distort analytics data and unexpectedly increase infrastructure costs. At the same time, useful bots—such as search engine crawlers and those used for legitimate service integrations—still need to be allowed. Website operators are therefore required to carefully identify and manage bots rather than block them indiscriminately.

Kinsta's Bot Protection feature enables the visualization of automated traffic and allows flexible management of AI crawlers and bot access based on each site's specific requirements. By appropriately controlling access based on type and purpose, the feature minimizes performance impact and enables more accurate traffic analytics.

Key Features of Bot Protection

This feature can be easily configured on a per-environment basis via the dedicated control panel, 'MyKinsta.'

Main features include:

- Four-tier bot protection levels - Blocking of AI crawlers - Allowing WordPress automated processes - Exception settings by IP address, user agent, and path - Visualization and analysis of bot traffic - Bulk application across multiple sites

Four Selectable Bot Protection Levels

Users can choose from four levels of protection based on their site's needs, categorizing access as 'Allow,' 'Verify,' or 'Block.' This allows operators to flexibly apply settings suited to their operations while monitoring the effectiveness of bot protection. For detailed information, please refer to the documentation.

The Era Where 'Blocking First' No Longer Works

Bot control often requires specialized knowledge and imposes high operational burdens, making it difficult for teams to manage effectively. In the AI era, the number of bots requiring careful management—such as search engine crawlers and integration bots—is only increasing. Blocking all bots risks cutting off essential traffic, while doing nothing allows non-converting traffic to continue consuming server resources.

Kinsta's Bot Protection feature not only blocks malicious traffic but also enables flexible, environment-specific management of AI crawlers and automated traffic. Since site owners can configure settings directly through MyKinsta, there is no need to contact support or use additional tools. The feature supports diverse site requirements while helping protect performance, improve data reliability, and reduce operational overhead.

Availability

This feature has been refined based on feedback from customers in the closed beta program and is now being rolled out in beta to all customers.

Kinsta will continue to enhance the feature, aiming to create an environment where growing automated traffic can be managed more easily and effectively.
