Y. & SONS Launches 'SOSAKUBAG,' Basket Bags Woven from Dyed Kozo (Mulberry Paper)

Y. & SONS, a brand with the concept of a kimono tailor, handled by Yamato Co., Ltd. (Headquarters: Shibuya-ku, Tokyo, President and CEO: Takayuki Yajima), which operates kimono specialty stores, will begin handling 'SOSAKUBAG,' a basket bag brand based in Mashiko Town, Tochigi Prefecture, from Thursday, April 2, 2026.

'SOSAKUBAG' are basket bags woven from dyed kozo (mulberry paper), the raw material for Japanese paper. To commemorate the launch, POP-UP events will be held sequentially at each Y. & SONS store. This event will feature special colors custom-ordered for Y. & SONS, as well as limited-time collections not usually available in stores.

Additionally, on Saturday, April 11th, the artist Sōsaku Okumura is scheduled to be present at the Y. & SONS Omotesando store.

■ About SOSAKUBAG
'SOSAKUBAG' is a basket bag brand established in 2020 by Sōsaku Okumura, who is active based in Mashiko Town, Tochigi Prefecture.

Using kozo, the raw material for Japanese paper, he handles all processes from dyeing to weaving by himself. The concept is to create products from the "family unit," drawing on the skills of his wife, a Japanese paper artist, his father, a metal craft artist, and his mother, who was involved in kimono dyeing.

Each piece is accompanied by names and words inspired by childhood memories, world travel experiences, and striking scenes.

Furthermore, all bags come with a brass tag engraved with a serial number, one of the details indicating that each product has a unique appearance. Unlike basket bags made from walnut or wild grape bark, they are characterized by a light and supple texture, are lightweight yet highly durable, and are suitable for everyday use.

From the five shapes offered by SOSAKUBAG, three models – "tiny," "petit," and "toto" – have been selected and will be available in five custom colors.

Additionally, this custom order model comes with a metal plate specially made for Y. & SONS. The brass plate is a detail rooted in the presence of his father, a metal craft artist, and is one of the elements symbolizing the family story behind 'SOSAKUBAG's' craftsmanship. It is a subtle feature unique to the custom order model, making it stand out.

Lightly dyed using chestnuts from Mashiko, this is an easy-to-style color.

Brown (charcoal)
A deep brown, dyed deeply using chestnuts from Mashiko.

Ash Mauve (ceylon dust)
Dyed using gallnuts. A natural dye that was once used for tooth blackening.

Olive (green memory)
Dyed using dried mugwort leaves and stems, with some Mashiko-sourced materials.

Black (yozora)
Dyed with logwood for a deep black finish.

■ Aging and Maintenance
The aging process unique to kozo material is also one of its characteristics. For about six months after starting use, fuzz may appear, but you can cut off any bothersome parts. After about a year, it will settle down and a natural sheen will emerge.

No special care is required, but if it gets wet, dry it in the shade. Wiping with beeswax wax every six months will enhance its glossy texture.

Additionally, maintenance by the artist is available, including re-wrapping of handles and repairs.
