View Details

Our company has been promoting the charms of each area through the operation of "THE THOUSAND KYOTO" and "Biwako Hotel." This time, we will establish a new base in Mount Hiei, a place of high historical and cultural value, and provide unique experiential value that can only be enjoyed here. By organically connecting "Kyoto," "Lake Biwa," and "Mount Hiei" in the future, we aim to enhance the appeal of the entire area.

Renewal Concept: “Oriental Healing Retreat on Mount Hiei.”

Mount Hiei Enryaku-ji Temple, a World Heritage site. It is a sacred place of Japanese Buddhism that has woven over 1,200 years of history since its opening by Saicho. "THE THOUSAND HIEI ── Mui Okuyama," born in this place, the origin of Japanese religion and culture, is a 33-room inn quietly nestled in the vast forest of Hiei, away from the hustle and bustle of the city, through quiet mountain paths.

Since Saicho brought the practice of "Makashikan," which includes knowledge of Buddhist medicine, to Japan, and personally carved Yakushi Nyorai (Bhaisajyaguru) and enshrined it as the principal image of Enryaku-ji Temple, Mount Hiei has actually had a deep connection with "healing" for the mind and body since ancient times.

At "THE THOUSAND HIEI ── Mui Okuyama," we will make the sacred spring water of Hiei, which has been revered for a long time, the core of the stay, and provide a blissful stay experience that carefully nurtures the mind and body through dietary therapy, acupuncture, and hot spring bathing experiences, inspired by the culture and history of Mount Hiei Enryaku-ji Temple, which enshrines Yakushi Nyorai, the Buddha of medicine.

Furthermore, Mercury Co., Ltd. is participating in the basic concept and is jointly conducting concept and service design with Keihan Hotels & Resorts Co., Ltd.

◆ Mercury Co., Ltd.

A hotel production company led by Ms. Shoko Ryuzaki. Since its establishment in 2015, it has opened small luxury hotels that incorporate the local atmosphere throughout Japan. Advocating "hotels as media" that expand the choices of the world and life through accommodation facilities, it is widely developing new businesses in various contexts related to tourism and lifestyle, such as Oriental medicine, perinatal care, nursing care, performing arts, education, and daily life.

About the expansion of the "THE THOUSAND" brand

"THE THOUSAND KYOTO," which opened in front of Kyoto Station in 2019, has welcomed many domestic and international guests as a "Sustainable Comfort Hotel" that delivers inspiring experiences pursuing comfort and sustainability for the "next thousand years" from "Kyoto, the city of a thousand years," based on the concept of "Thousand-Year Hotel." This time, in establishing a new base on Mount Hiei, we will inherit the philosophy of the "THE THOUSAND" brand, which is "comfortable and inspiring experiences for people, society, and the future." We will expand hospitality into the extraordinary realm of a wellness resort, creating a unique retreat facility that nurtures the mind and body amidst nature and tranquility.

About the naming of "THE THOUSAND HIEI ── Mui Okuyama"

The sub-name "Mui" signifies a way of being in harmony with the nature of Mount Hiei, away from the hustle and bustle of the city and artificial things, and "Okuyama" indicates the special geographical condition of being on Mount Hiei, separated from the urban area. By combining "Mui" as spirituality and "Okuyama" as locality, it expresses the aesthetic of an Oriental healing retreat that cherishes the luxury of simply doing nothing, immersed in the tranquility of a remote mountain far from the hustle and bustle of busy daily life, and being as one is.
