Kitanakagusuku Village (Location: Okinawa Prefecture, Village Mayor: Takanori Higa) and Okinawa Cellular Telephone Company, Ltd. (Headquarters: Naha City, Okinawa Prefecture, President: Yasuaki Miyakura, hereinafter "Okinawa Cellular"), and KDDI Smart Mobility Inc. (Headquarters: Chuo-ku, Tokyo, President: Kei Matsudaira, hereinafter "KDDI Smart Mobility") will launch the AI on-demand transit service "mobi" in Kitanakagusuku Village, Okinawa Prefecture, starting Wednesday, July 1, 2026.
AI on-demand transit "mobi" is a new style of "shared transit service" that serves as an alternative to walking, cycling, or short trips by private car within one's living area, providing a new means of transportation for hospital visits, local shopping, and more.
In Kitanakagusuku Village, issues include chronic traffic congestion, ensuring transportation for the elderly and students who do not have driver's licenses, and improving access to medical and commercial facilities. Furthermore, due to the geographical characteristic of dispersed settlements and the limited coverage of existing bus routes, there are "transportation deserts" where residents experience inconvenience in their daily lives.
In particular, with an aging population, securing transportation options that do not rely on private vehicles is an urgent task. There is a need for last-mile transportation that connects residents' homes to their destinations, addressing the transportation challenges closely related to the daily lives of local residents, including the elderly's hospital visits and shopping, and families with young children.
The introduction of "mobi" will enable the provision of detailed transportation services tailored to local conditions, complementing existing public transportation. This will enhance the convenience of mobility for diverse residents, including the elderly and families with young children, while also creating opportunities for going out, reducing living burdens, and promoting local circulation, aiming for the further development of Kitanakagusuku Village in the future.
Kitanakagusuku Village, Okinawa Cellular, and KDDI Smart Mobility will continue to work with the local community to solve local transportation issues.
* The operation of this service will be carried out by Yuuna Taxi Co., Ltd.
