Kawade Shobo Shinsha Celebrates 140th Anniversary with Pop-up Bookstore 'Kawade Shoten' — Inaugural Event on July 19, 2026, Features Talk by Fujisawa Shu and Takeda Satetsu

Kawade Shobo Shinsha Co., Ltd. (Shinjuku-ku, Tokyo / President Yu Onodera) is launching Kawade Shoten (Kawade Bookstore) to commemorate its 140th anniversary.

The first opening day will be on Sunday, July 19, 2026. Subsequent opening dates will be announced on the official Kawade Shoten website, and the store will operate on a full reservation basis.

● About Kawade Shoten

A small, occasional bookstore opening on the 3rd floor of Kawade Shobo Shinsha’s headquarters.

Each time it opens, a guest—such as an author, translator, book designer, or editor—will select books they cherish and share stories about them.

Shelves lined with 140 years of publishing history will welcome you.

You may discover the book you’ve always searched for—or one you’ve never known before.

② Those wishing to attend in person must apply for a "Live Viewing" ticket. If demand exceeds capacity, a lottery will be held, and only selected applicants may purchase tickets.

③ Those wishing to attend online should purchase a "Streaming" ticket.

④ Enjoy the guest’s talk about books on the day of the event.

⑤ After the talk, enjoy shopping at the bookstore.

〈Important Notes〉

※ Entry is limited to the ticket holder only. A photo ID (driver’s license, My Number card, passport, student ID, etc.) will be required for entry. Entry may be denied without proper identification.

※ Access to offices other than Kawade Shoten on the 3rd floor is strictly prohibited.

※ Kawade Shoten will feature all available Kawade Bunko titles and curated book fairs. Not all Kawade Shobo Shinsha publications will be available—please understand in advance.

※ Tickets are required for elementary school students and above. Preschool children may attend free of charge, one per ticket-holding adult.

※ Staff may inspect attendees’ belongings—your cooperation is appreciated.

※ Late arrivals due to personal circumstances or transportation delays, or failure to follow staff instructions, may result in denied entry.

※ No refunds will be issued for no-shows. For those unable to attend, two guest-selected Kawade Bunko books and a 140th-anniversary tote bag will be sent postpaid. Delivery address must be submitted by the deadline via instructions sent to your registered email on Zaiko after the event. Failure to respond by the deadline will result in no shipment.

※ For attendee safety, events may be changed or canceled due to natural disasters or weather. Refund procedures in case of cancellation will be announced via Zaiko as soon as decided.

Talk Event: Fujisawa Shu × Takeda Satetsu — "Why We Write and Read Books Today"

Fujisawa Shu, who debuted in 1993 with "Turn Left into the Zone" (later retitled "Death Game") in the literary magazine Bungei after working as an editor at a book newspaper, and Takeda Satetsu, also a former editor (at Kawade Shobo Shinsha) who published his first solo work "Stereotype Society" in 2015. These two authors, both former editors with strong ties to Kawade, will appear at the first Kawade Shoten.

They will freely discuss why we write and read books in this age—sharing stories from their editorial days, behind-the-scenes of writing and magazine serialization, and even things they’ve always wanted to say to publishers (especially Kawade).

Kawade Shoten is a small bookstore where creators, readers, and distributors of books can exchange words in the same space. Please join us for this inaugural evening.
