25 fifth-grade students at Yobuko Elementary School holding whale keychains made from plastic bottle caps.
On March 6, 2026, the NPO Karatsu Farm & Food surprised 25 fifth-grade students and their homeroom teacher at Karatsu Municipal Yobuko Elementary School with 27 whale keychains, crafted by upcycling approximately 100 plastic bottle caps. The creation of these keychains was inspired by the students themselves, who wrote in their essays after marine education classes that they "wanted a keychain!" Working alongside their teacher, the design was finalized with a whale motif, symbolizing the local coastal waters of Yobuko. Whale keychains designed with the Yobuko coastal waters in mind, created by upcycling about 100 plastic bottle caps.
"It's beautiful!" "Thank you!"—The surprise gift was met with smiles.
The Story Behind the Keychains For the past four years, since 2022, NPO Karatsu Farm & Food has partnered continuously with Yobuko Elementary School to conduct beach cleanups and marine education (ESD). Several students mentioned "I want a keychain!" in the essays they submitted after these activities. This feedback served as the catalyst for the project. By collaborating with the teacher on the design, they chose the whale as a symbol of the Yobuko sea.
