Professor Emeritus Katsuhiro Miyamoto of Kansai University has analyzed the economic impact of domestic tourism during the 2026 Golden Week, which is expected to reach approximately 2,946.3 billion yen.
Professor Miyamoto stated, 'This result is a decrease compared to the approximately 2,957 billion yen in 2025. While the economic impact of many events has been on an upward trend since COVID-19 was reclassified to Class 5, domestic travel and tourism during Golden Week have shown a decline compared to the previous year. This is likely because, although the number of foreign visitors to Japan increased slightly, the consumption amount of Japanese people for travel and tourism decreased significantly.
If this situation continues for a long time, the profits of Japan's tourism industry may shift toward a decline due to the decrease in domestic tourism, stagnant salary levels, and rising costs for transportation, dining, materials, and labor. This would have a major negative impact not only on the travel industry but on the Japanese economy as a whole. Behind this trend is the rise in energy prices due to international instability, which has led to high costs for consumer and capital goods such as transportation, construction, labor, food, and water. This has caused people to fall into lifestyle anxiety, fearing such conditions might last for a long time, thereby strengthening the tendency to refrain from consumption and investment. As a result, the world and Japanese economies could slow down significantly. It is important for nations to work toward suppressing conflict so that the world can be at peace and people can live with peace of mind.'
